
Three More Rookies Inked

SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls have signed rookie forwards Alexandre Piche and Guillaume Fournier, while also signing rookie defenseman Mathieu Wathier, head coach Martin St. Amour announced on Tuesday. Per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Piche, 24, begins his professional career after spending the last four years playing college hockey for the University of Quebec Trois Rivieres. Last season, the 5-foot-11-inch, 198-pound native of Rimouski, Quebec scored 39 points (20g, 19a), good for 16th in the Canadian Intramural Sport league. During his four-year tenure at the University of Quebec, Piche notched 117 points (52g, 64a) and 206 penalty minutes in 104 games. Piche played previously in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Fournier, 21, starts his rookie campaign after playing the last four years in the QMJHL. Last season the 5-foot-8-inch, 182-pounder from Lyster, Quebec split time between the Victoriaville Tigres and the Gatineau Olympiques, scoring 88 points (40g, 48a). Fournier also notched 88 points in 2002-03 (46g, 42a) while playing for Victoriaville. In his four-year QMJHL career, he tallied 247 points (114g, 133a) in 267 games.
Wathier, 21, also begins his pro career after spending the last five seasons in the QMJHL. Last season the 6-foot-1-inch, 195-pound defenseman from Les Coteaux, Quebec scored 24 points (10g, 14a) for the Moncton Wildcats. His best season in Juniors came in 2002-03 when he notched 27 points (13g, 14a) for the Sherbrooke Beavers. During his five-year stint in the QMJHL, Wathier tallied 77 points (32g, 45a) in 308 games.
With Piche, Fournier and Wathier signed, the Gulls' roster now officially has 14 players.
The Gulls open their second season in the ECHL Friday, Oct. 22 in Long Beach and open their home schedule Saturday, Oct. 23 against Fresno. Season ticket packages are currently on sale.
