Three More Honkers Drafted
June 8, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Rochester Honkers News Release
Three more players with ties to the Rochester Honkers were taken today in the second half of the MLB First Year Players draft Wednesday. Two of which will be joining the Honkers shortly, as temporary players. With three current or former Honkers taken today, it ups the total number of drafted Honkers to 17, seven of which are on the current roster.
Damek Tomscha, an infielder from Iowa Western Community College was the first one to get taken in the second half. Tomscha was drafted last year, but was able to get picked up again, since he is still in a junior college. The Florida Marlins organization was the team on the other end of the line this year, when Damek got the call. According to the rules, Damek can be eligible again next year if he doesn't sign before the next draft.
Just six picks later, a former Honker was taken in the draft, pitcher Arik Sikula, by the Toronto Blue Jays. Sikula was a member of the 2009 Northwoods League Championship team, and last season's Northwoods League runner-up. He just finished his finals season as a member of the Marshall Thundering Herd, with a 2-6 record. Arik was tied for first on the team with 13 games started, and had a 5.42 ERA. He also struck out a team high 72 batters.
The final player with Honker ties to get drafted was Travis Lane, by the Kansas City Royals in the 41st round. Lane, a temporary contract catcher on this year's team. Lane plays for former head coach Ryan Ruiz at Central Arizona College, and put up good numbers this past season. His team high .564 slugging percentage and his .364 batting average helped lead the Vaqueros to a runner up finish at the Junior College World Series.
The Honkers are currently in Thunder Bay, Ontario, but will travel home for a 7:05 game Thursday, June 8, against the Duluth Huskies. If they do not sign a professional contract, the seven drafted Honkers will be in action soon at Mayo Field.
