Honkers Lose in Wild Finish
June 8, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Rochester Honkers News Release
Game three of the Honkers and Border Cats series started as a low scoring affair, and ended in a wild finish, with the Honkers dropping the rubber match, 5-4. Both teams combined for just three runs before a ninth inning which had each team score that many, taking advantage of untimely mistakes both ways in the end.
Matt Strahm (Fr, Neosho County CC) got the start on the hill for the Honkers, pitching a good outing, with 7.0 innings, six hits, two runs and six strikeouts. Strahm improved his season ERA to 5.40, after allowing seven runs against Mankato in the Honkers home opener.
Honkers second basemen, Davy Wright (So, Texas Christian) had his best hitting game of the season, going 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI, including a clutch two-run double in the ninth. The double in the ninth was his second of the game, after he hit one first as well. Matt Beyer (Jr, UW-Whitewater) continued his assault on the base paths, stealing his ninth base of the season.
The Honkers looked to have the game sealed after the aforementioned double by Wright put them ahead by two, just three outs from their second consecutive victory. Relief pitcher Robert Hansen (Fr, Vanderbilt) struggled with control in the ninth, letting up some untimely walks, and a wild pitch to let the winning run score. Hansen came in relief in the eighth inning, allowing only one batter on, via an error, before entering the ninth.
Devin Thaut (Jr, Southern Polytechnic State) had his first multiple hit game, and is seeming to have settled in after an 0-for-17 start to the season. Thaut went 2-for-3, scoring one and batting in one run, after leading the game off with a single.
The Honkers will look to rebound tomorrow after a long bus ride home, when they take on the Duluth Huskies at 7:05pm at Mayo Field. The Honkers will have recent seventh round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers, Brian Flynn (RsSo, Wichita State) on the hill, making his season debut, versus Joey Novak for Duluth. With today's loss, the Honkers fall to 2-6 on the season, four games back from division leader Mankato.
