Three M-Braves on Southern League All-Star Team
July 1, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
Pearl, MS - The Mississippi Braves announce that four Mississippi Braves were voted into the Southern League All-Star game by the league's managers, broadcasters and beat writers. Catcher JC Boscan, pitcher Kyle Cofield and outfielder Matt Young will all play in the game while Jonny Venters was voted in, but will miss the game due to his promotion to AAA Gwinnett. Young will leadoff and play centerfield in the game while Boscan will start behind the plate and bat eighth.
Boscan has had one of the best seasons of his career as he's led the M-Braves with his bat as well as his prowess behind the plate. Boscan has hit .292 with 11 doubles, 26 RBI and 15 runs scored through 47 games with the M-Braves. He joins Jacksonville's Brad Davis as the only two catchers on the South Division team.
For the second straight season, Kyle Cofield was named a mid-season all-star. In 2008, he was named to the Carolina League All-Star game and has now been voted into the Southern League All-Star game after posting a 5-2 record with a 3.08 ERA through 13 starts for Mississippi.
Matt Young will play in the Southern League All-Star game for the second straight season. He started the '09 season in left field and made the move to centerfield after Gorkys Hernandez was traded. Matt has hit .279 with 16 doubles, four triples, two homers, 19 RBI and 47 runs scored through 79 games with the M-Braves.
Venters was 4-4 with a 2.76 ERA through 12 starts for the M-Braves before getting the promotion to AAA Gwinnett in early June.
