Braves rally in 9th for 6-5 win over D-Jaxx

JACKSON, TENN. (July 1, 2009) - The Mississippi Braves (5-4) score two runs in the top of the ninth inning and knock of the Diamond Jaxx (5-5) at Pringles Park, 6-5. Willie Cabrera scored five runs to set a Braves team record and Matt Young fell a homer away from the cycle as the Braves pounded out 13 hits in the game. The Jaxx were led at the plate by Johan Limonta who recorded a 2-for-5 game at the plate with a triple and run scored. Colt Morton and Greg Halman each homer in the loss for the Diamond Jaxx. The Braves and Jaxx have split the first four games of the series.

The Braves touched the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning. Concepcion Rodriguez drove in Willie Cabrera with an RBI triple. Matt Young led the game off with a single and Cabrera reached on a fielders choice.

The Jaxx tallied a run to answer in the bottom of the first. With two aboard, Colt Morton drove in Mel Stocker with a sacrifice fly to center. Stocker opened the inning with a single to left and Greg Halman reached on a fielding error by the Braves second baseman, Kody Kirkland. After one the Jaxx and Braves were tied, 1-1.

The Jaxx took a brief lead in the bottom of the second went Brent Johnson scored on a dropped third strike force out of Leury Bonilla. Johnson singled to open the inning. Mississippi knotted the game at two each in the top of the third when Concepcion Rodriguez reached on a fielding error by Greg Halman that brought in Willie Cabrera.

The Jaxx re-took the lead in the top of the fourth as David Espinosa singled in Johan Limonta. Limonta tripled to open the inning and now is tied for the league lead with six triples.

In the top of the fifth, Mississippi scored two runs to take a 4-3 lead. Matt Young tripled to center which was followed by a double by Willie Cabrera and a single by Greg Creek.

The Jaxx continued to mirror the Braves with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Greg Halman notched his league leading 16th homer of the season to tie the game at four each and then Colt Morton launched his 4th long ball of the season to give the Jaxx a 5-4 lead.

But, the Jaxx ran into trouble in the ninth as Anthony Varvaro (2-1) walked four and gave up one hit, surrendering two runs to the Braves. Kody Kirkland drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and J.C. Boscan drove in the game winning run with a single. The loss snaps the Jaxx two-game win streak. Cory Gearrin (1-1) gets the win for the Braves dealing a scoreless inning of relief, while Brian Dumesnil (S, 1) records his first save.

The Jaxx and Braves are not split on the season with the Braves and Jaxx each taking seven games this season. Game five of the series is at 7:05 at Pringles Park on Thursday night. RHP Steve Bray (1-4, 3.49) starts for the Diamond Jaxx and LHP Scott Diamond takes the hill for Mississippi.
