Mobile BayBears News Release
HOOVER, Ala. - After a 16-inning marathon on Tuesday night at Regions Park, the BayBears and Birmingham Barons locked up for 10 more rounds on Wednesday night while the BayBears claimed a 6-5 victory thanks to an unearned run in the top of the 10th.
Eli Rumler reached on a fielding error by Robbie Hudson to kick off the overtime on Wednesday. Rumler advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a single by Chris Rahl before Bryan Byrne's sac fly scored him to break a 5-5 tie.
Birmingham (52-26, 4-5) knotted the score with a tally in the bottom of the ninth against Reid Mahon (4-1) who was trying to nail down a save for Barry Enright as he rattled off eight quality innings. Mahon surrendered a one-out single in the ninth to Stefan Gartrell and then balked him over to second. After an error by Mark Hallberg, Christian Marrero knocked Gartrell home with an infield single.
It was a night of comebacks as the BayBears (42-38, 5-5) found themselves in a 4-1 hole entering the seventh inning before stringing together five consecutive hits. Ricardo Sosa drove in a run with a double while Hallberg singled Sosa home to pull the BayBears within one. Rumler's opposite-field single tied the game, and Evan Frey put the BayBears ahead with a fielder's choice grounder.
Enright retired the last nine hitters he faced after a rough fifth inning that saw the Barons swipe the advantage. Hudson broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run single to score Javier Colina and Marrero. Hudson came home on a base hit by C.J. Retherford to make it 4-1.
The BayBears scored first for the third successive night as Frey led off the fourth with a triple and came home on the first of Byrne's two sac flies. Birmingham tied the contest at 1-1 after Retherford singled and took third on an error. David Cook's ground ball to second put the Barons on the board.
The BayBears continue their six-game series with the Barons on Thursday night at 7:05 as Matt Torra (5-6, 3.86) takes the hill. The BayBears return to Mobile for Independence Day, Saturday, July 4, as they'll host the Chattanooga Lookouts at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
