Three Goal Third Period Dooms Express to 4-2 Loss
March 1, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Chicago Express News Release
Hoffman Estates, IL - The Chicago Express, proud member of the ECHL and proud affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, surrendered three goals in the third period and fell 4-2 to the Cincinnati Cyclones at the U.S. Bank Arena on Thursday night.
After four straight games without a first period goal, the Express struck first as F Ryley Grantham collected a rebound in front of the Cyclones net and tapped the puck home, boosting Chicago to a 1-0 advantage. Just under three minutes later, Cincinnati evened up the score, as RW Joe Devin fed a cross-ice pass to LW Garrett Wilson, who deflected the pass into the back of the net. D Taylor Ellington restored Chicago's lead with just 59 seconds remaining in the period, as an offensive zone faceoff following a penalty shot attempt from F Mike Embach was hammered home by Ellington. Chicago took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Chicago's lead held through the second period, thanks in large part to G Peter Mannino turning aside all 14 Cyclones shots. Cincinnati's pressure would eventually get to the Express in the form of three third period goals. D Taylor Aronson tied the game at 6:03 with a slapper from the point, and the Cyclones grabbed the lead on goal by LW Joe Devin 1:12 later. C Matthew Sisca put the finishing touch on the Cyclones comeback with a breakaway goal with 3:33 left in the frame, as Chicago fell 4-2 to Cincinnati.
Power plays: CHI: 0/4; CIN: 0/5
Three stars: 1. J. Devin (CIN); 2. G. Wilson (CIN); 3. T. Aronson (CIN)
