
Smith Is the MeiGray Group ECHL Alumnus of the Month

PRINCETON, N.J.- Former ECHL and current Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith is The MeiGray Group ECHL Alumnus of the Month for February.
The leading distributor of game- worn hockey jerseys and "Official Game-Worn Jersey Source of the ECHL," MeiGray sold more than 700 game-worn jerseys in 2010-11 and has sold more than 6,000 since it became "The Official Game-Worn Jersey Source of the ECHL" in 2002-03.
The 29-year-old was 11-0-0 with two shutouts, a 1.42 goals-against average and a save percentage of .952 in February, helping lead the Coyotes to an 11-0-1 mark during the month. Smith allowed one goal or less in eight of his 11 appearances in February, and posted his shutouts in back-to-back games, turning aside all 38 shots in a 3-0 win against Chicago on Feb. 12 and stopping 28 shots in a 1-0 victory at Los Angeles on Feb. 16. He ended the month with 39 saves in a 2-1 shootout win against Vancouver on Feb. 28.
Smith has appeared in a career-high 50 games for Phoenix this season, posting a record of 29-14-7 with four shutouts, a 2.24 goals-against average, which ranks 10th in the NHL, and a save percentage of .927, which is seventh in the league.
The Kingston, Ontario native appeared in 27 games with the Lexington Men O'War in 2002-03, posting a record of 11-10-4 with one shutout, a 2.55 goals-against average and a save percentage of .910. On Oct. 26, 2002, he became just the sixth goaltender in ECHL histroy to score a goal in a game against the Dayton Bombers. Smith appeared in 132 career American Hockey League games with Utah, Houston, Iowa and Norfolk, posting a record of 58-58-9 with 11 shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.96 and a save percentage of .914.
A fifth-round selection (161st overall) by the Dallas Stars in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Smith has appeared in 212 career NHL games with Dallas, Tampa Bay and Phoenix. He has an overall record of 96-80-26 with 15 shutouts, a 2.60 goals-against average and a save percentage of .927.
There have been 488 players who have played in the NHL after playing in the ECHL including 21 who have made their debut this season and 23 in 2010-11. The ECHL has had 296 players reach the NHL since 2002-03 when it changed its focus to become the primary developmental league for the NHL and the AHL. The ECHL had 97 players reach the NHL in its first 10 seasons and 215 in the first 15 years. There have been 232 ECHL players who have played their first game in the last seven seasons for an average of more than 33 per year.
