Chicago Stars FC News Release
CHICAGO - Three Chicago Red Stars are set to join the United States Women's National Team (USWNT) for their upcoming international friendly matches against South Africa later this month. Defenders, Tierna Davidson and Casey Krueger, and goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher, will join the USWNT following the club's September 17 match against Angel City FC at SeatGeek Stadium in Chicago.
This is the second call-up this year for both Davidson and Krueger who both joined the USWNT for friendly matches against the Republic of Ireland back in April. The pair of defenders did not play in the first match against Ireland, but came on as substitutes in the second match that resulted in a 1-0 win for the U.S. For Davidson, that was the Menlo Park, CA native's first minutes with the national team since the 2022 SheBelieves Cup, though, Davidson did participate in the team's January camp at the start of this year. For Krueger, the Naperville, IL native, the match against Ireland marked the defender's first minutes with the national team since October 12, 2021. If Davidson plays in either of the two matches against South Africa, the defender will reach the 50 caps milestone with the USWNT. Both Davidson and Krueger were part of the 2021 USWNT that traveled to Tokyo for the summer Olympics and helped the United States win the bronze medal.
For goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher, this will be the veteran's fourth call-up this year, and the first since traveling with the team to Australia and New Zealand for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. In the World Cup, Naeher was one of four players (Julie Ertz, Naomi Girma and Andi Sullivan) to play every minute of the tournament for the United States. In their final match against Sweden, Naeher recorded her seventh World-Cup shutout after the 0-0 draw in regulation and extra time. Naeher ranks third all-time in USWNT World Cup shutouts behind Hope Solo (10) and Briana Scurry (9). Naeher - who has 95 appearances with the USWNT, 56 cleansheets and two World Cup titles - added to her illustrious career by becoming the first goalkeeper to take and convert a penalty in a men's or women's World Cup shootout.
With Davidson, Krueger and Naeher joining the USWNT, the Chicago Red Stars now have four players joining their national teams during the September international break. Midfielder, Bianca St-Georges, is set to join the Canadian Women's National Team for their Olympic qualifying matches against Jamaica.
The USWNT take on South Africa September 21 in Cincinatti before coming to Chicago's historic Soldier Field Sunday, September 24, with kickoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT. Red Stars fans can secure tickets to both the club's September 17 match against Angel City and the USWNT's September 24 match at Soldier Field through a special two-match ticket pack offer.
