Three Back with Nine to Go!

June 9, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

Rich Rundles came within three outs of his second consecutive complete game, as the Springfield Cardinals snapped a four-game slide, beating the Wichita Wranglers on Friday night by a final score of 5-3 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.

Coming off a complete game win in Frisco, Rundles was sharp again, holding the Wranglers to just one run on three hits over the fist eight innings. With the Cards nursing a 5-1 lead to open the ninth, Rundles allowed consecutive hits to Walter Sevilla and Mitch Maier. That brought in reliever Mark Worrell out of the bullpen. Worrell, who missed out on a save in an 8-4 loss on Thursday, converted his 15th save in 19 opportunities. Worrell did allow both inherited runners to score, but got the tying run, Chris Lubanski, to ground out to end the game.

The Cardinals got to Wichita starter Seung Jun Song for a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Terry Evans, making his Double-A debut, drove home his first RBI with a sac fly to right field, plating Juan Richardson in the fourth for a 1-0 lead. Josh Pressley followed with a two-out hit, scoring Rico Washington for a 2-0 advantage.

Springfield got a sac fly from Reid Gorecki and another two-out hit, this one from Juan Richardson, taking a 4-0 lead in the fifth.

The Redbirds got their final run of the game against Song (4-6) in the sixth, as Jarrett Hoffpauir chased home Nick Stavinoha from second base with an RBI single, making it 5-0. Song went five-plus innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits.

Wichita was held to just an infield single in the first six innings, but finally got on the board against Rundles (5-4) in the seventh. Mitch Maier led off the inning with a single, then one out later, scored on a Dee Brown double, making it 5-1.

Rundles' final line was eight-plus innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits. He matched his season-high with five strikeouts, while issuing just one walk in earning his second straight win.

Terry Evans finished 0-4 in his debut, driving in a run with the sac fly. Evans fills the roster spot left by Brian Martin, who was promoted to Triple-A Memphis earlier in the week.

The win for the Cards is just their third in the last 11 games, as they finish the road trip at just 3-8. Springfield (33-26) remains three games behind Tulsa in the North Division, with just nine games remaining in the 2006 first half. All nine games are home games for the Cardinals, as they are 18-8 in the friendly confines of Hammons Field. The nine-game home stand kicks off on Saturday at 6:10pm against the Arkansas Travelers. Jordan Pals (4-1) takes on Arkansas lefty Daniel Davidson in the opening game of the five-game series. Fans are invited to bring a canned food item or a cash donation to the game on Saturday as part of "Strike Out Hunger Food Collection", thanks to American Family Insurance and Ozarks Food Harvest. Tickets are available for Saturday as well as all nine games in the home stand by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
