One night after Marc Kaiser limited the Arkansas Travelers to only three hits in eight innings, Ubaldo Jimenez went one step further. Jimenez also allowed only three hits, but went the full nine innings as the Tulsa Drillers blanked the Arkansas Travelers 5-0 Saturday night before 7,019 fans and salvaged a split in the 4-game series.
Jimenez was dominating, permitting only one runner to advance past first base. He recorded ten strikeouts while walking only one hitter. The 22-year-old became the first Tulsa pitcher to go a full nine innings this season.
It was the fourth straight win for Jimenez, as he became the first 7-game winner in the Texas League this year. In those four wins, he has surrendered only 3 runs in 26 innings (1.04 ERA) while striking out 28 hitters.
In Saturday's victory, the Drillers offense gave Jimenez an early lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning and two more in the fourth. In the second, Chris Iannetta doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Czarniecki.
In the fourth, Iannetta led off with his 9th homer of the year to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Czarniecki tripled and scored on a single by Jud Thigpen.
Iannetta struck again in the 6th inning when he doubled with one out and scored on a hit by Joe Koshansky.
Tulsa made it 5-0 in the eighth as Ian Stewart singled, stole second and later scored on Koshansky's third hit of the night.
The Drillers totaled 12 hits in the victory with Koshansky, Iannetta and Seth Smith all collecting three hits each.
The win kept Tulsa three games in front of Springfield in the North Division standings. The Cardinals were 5-3 winners over the Wichita Wranglers.
The Drillers will now begin a 5-game series against the Wranglers. In the series opener Saturday night, Enmanuel Ulloa (4-2, 3.52 ERA) will take the mound against Neal Musser (1-0, 0.00 ERA) of the Wranglers. Game time at Drillers Stadium is scheduled for 7:05PM.
