Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - One night after taking a no-hitter into the 7th inning, you'd think it would be hard pressed for the Great Lakes Loons pitching staff to outdo themselves. But a combined season-high 18 strikeouts between Victor Gonzalez, Dean Kremer and Shea Spitzbarth was quite the performance as the Loons shut out the Fort Wayne TinCaps 2-0 on Thursday at Dow Diamond. The previous mark was set on July 20 against the Kane County Cougars when the Loons struck out 16 batters.

Allowing just two hits as a team, the Loons had left-hander Gonzalez pave the way for Kremer and Spitzbarth with nine strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings pitched. Not in line for the win, he allowed just two hits and issued only two walks in his outing.

After Kremer (W, 2-0) came on in relief in the 5th inning, he and Spitzbarth did not allow a hit the rest of the way. Kremer contributed three strikeouts while Spitzbarth (SV, 4) struck out all six batters he faced to close out the contest.

"Victor did a great job tonight and I commend him for that," Kremer said on ESPN 100.9-FM after the game. "(My goal) was the same as always, I just tried to go out there and pound the zone."

The Loons were able to push two runs across in the ballgame against Fort Wayne starter Thomas Dorminy (L, 4-5) with one coming in the 5th inning on an RBI-single from Saige Jenco, and an insurance run in the 8th when Darien Tubbs doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.

It was a rare complete game in the Midwest League from Dorminy as he threw all eight innings and allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

With the victory, the Loons (29-30; 58-71) keep their 1/2 game lead over the Lansing Lugnuts for the final Midwest League playoff spot as Lansing defeated the Dayton Dragons 7-2 in Ohio.

"We know that there's a race and we want to win it," Kremer said. "We're all trying to the best of our ability to make it happen."

With the homestand in the books, just 11 games remain in the regular season for Great Lakes as they now head on the road for seven games against the South Bend Cubs and a return trip to Fort Wayne to face the TinCaps (22-38; 58-72).

You can follow the team on their road trip by listening to Chris Vosters call every game on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.

The Great Lakes Loons, hosts of the 2017 Midwest League All-Star Game, have been a Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007 and are in their 10th season. For tickets and more information about the Loons, call 989-837-BALL or visit Loons.com.
