Snappers Walk off on LumberKings to Earn Series Split

August 25, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Beloit, WI - In what turned out to be a classic pitchers duel at Pohlman Field, the LumberKings had chances to break a scoreless tie in the ninth and the tenth innings against the Snappers, but couldn't do it. Beloit cashed in during the bottom of the tenth, as a leadoff hit by pitch scored on a two out single from Edwin Diaz, giving the Snappers the 1-0 extra inning win. It is the fourth time in the second half that the LumberKings have lost a game 1-0.

Beloit's best chance to crack the ice came in the third, as with one out, Trace Loehr hit a soft ground ball down the first base line that online rolled 20 feet, but it hugged the line and stayed fair by an inch. Edwin Diaz flew out to left for the second out of the inning, but with Trent Gilbert up, Loehr stole second. Loehr then tried to steal third but Clinton starter Pedro Vasquez quickly got off the mound and picked off Loehr at second to end the inning.

On the other side of things, Snappers starter Brendan Butler was on point, not allowing a hit through the first four innings. He got the first two LumberKings he faced in the fifth, but then surrendered a single to center from Arturo Nieto, ending the no hit bid. Butler though would then get a ground out from Rayder Ascanio to end the inning.

Beloit would have plenty of decent chances to score, but their best one came in the eighth inning against Lukas Schiraldi. Luis Barrera pinch hit for Robert Martinez and smoked a single to right. Gus Craig charged in to field the ball, but it hit off his glove and rolled behind him to the wall, allowing Barrera to get all the way to third. Schiraldi then got Collin Theroux to strike out, but the LumberKings decided to walk Trace Loehr intentionally, as he was already three for three on the night. The move paid off as Schiraldi struck out Edwin Diaz to end the inning.

Clinton looked like they were going to use the huge escape in the eighth to springboard them into the lead in the ninth. Chris Mariscal and Alex Jackson notched back to back one out singles against Jordan Schwartz. Dalton Kelly then came up to pinch hit for Gus Craig, and Schwartz then threw a wild pitch that moved both runners into scoring position. After the wild pitch, Snappers manager Fran Riordan elected to have Kelly walked intentionally, bringing up Conner Hale. Hale drew a 2-0 count from Schwartz, but popped out to third for the second out, not advancing Mariscal home from third. Logan Taylor then pinch hit for Ivan Gonzalez, and hit into a fielders choice to end the inning.

The game would go into extras, and the LumberKings again had a great chance to break the scoreless tie in the tenth. Arturo Nieto smacked a double off the right field wall against Yordy Alejo (1-0) to lead off the top of the tenth. Rayder Ascanio then came up to bunt, but after the first pitch missed low, catcher Collin Theroux fired down to second and picked off Nieto. The LumberKings would not recover as a two out single from Rafael Fernandez was the only other hit they would get in the inning.

Matt Walker (4-3) came into the game for the LumberKings in the bottom of the tenth in a rare non save situation. Walker got a 1-2 count on the leadoff batter Skye Bolt, but then hit him to put the winning run on. Luis Barrera then hit a broken bat ground ball to second, moving Bolt to second for a productive first out. Collin Theroux then flew out to center for the second out, holding Bolt at second. Including the intentional walk in the eighth, Trace Loehr had reached base in his last eight plate appearances, and the LumberKings didn't want to risk him burning them, so like in the eighth, he was walked intentionally. However, the move didn't pay off a second time, as Edwin Diaz blooped a single to left, easily scoring Bolt to win the game.

The LumberKings return home for a seven game homestand beginning tomorrow with the opener of a four game series against Cedar Rapids. Luiz Gohara (4-1, 1.61) goes for the LumberKings, while the Kernels counter with righty Tyler Beardsley (0-2, 3.60). First pitch is at 6:30, and you can get your tickets by visiting www.lumberkings.com, calling 563-242-0727, or by stopping by the box office at Ashford University Field.
