Lancaster Stormers News Release
Charles County native Daryl Thompson fired seven innings of two-hit shutout baseball on Friday evening, pitching his hometown Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to a 7-2 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers as the Blue Crabs clinched the second half Liberty Division title.
Thompson (2-2) allowed a leadoff single to Tommy Everidge in the second and a double to the right center field gap by Blake Gailen to start the seventh. The right-hander walked no one and struck out seven.
Dwayne Pollok (14-4) held the Blue Crabs to one hit over the first 2 2/3 innings, but Mike Daniel reached him for his second double of the night, a screamer into the right field corner with two outs in the third. Brian Barton followed with his eighth homer of the season for a 2-0 lead. Southern Maryland was never challenged after that.
Pollok yielded a third run in the fifth. Again, the league ERA leader retired the first two batters. He got ahead of Jeremy Owens, then hit him with a pitch. Owens stole second and scored when Daniel sliced his third straight double down the left field line.
The Blue Crabs broke the game open off Ching-Lung Lo in the sixth. Jesse Gutierrez led off with a ball scorched down the left field line that kicked off the side wall and rolled along the warning track all the way to left center for a triple. The next two batters walked, and Richard Mercado drove in a pair with a single inside the third base bag. Kevin Rios knocked Lo out of the game with a bloop single to right that gave Southern Maryland a 6-0 cushion. A seventh Blue Crabs run scored on a pair of slow grounders after Ronnie Morales entered the game.
Tommy Everidge broke up the shutout bid with a two-run double into the right field corner off closer Chris Mobley in the ninth. The two-base hit scored Adam Godwin and Blake Gailen, who had both singled to start the inning.
The two clubs will square off for the second game of the series on Saturday evening. Lancaster will send Mark Brackman (8-10) to the hill against right-hander Dan Reichert (6-6). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio network at 6:15. The game will be joined in progress on 1600-AM, WPDC, following the conclusion of Pitt football.
