York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution scored three times in the eighth and hung on late for a thrilling 5-3 victory over the Sugar Land Skeeters in front of 7,698 fans at Constellation Field on Friday evening. The win is the Revs' 42nd of the second half, a new team record for wins in a half, as York pulls into a tie for first place for the first time since July 29 with two regular season games remaining. The Revs and Skeeters will meet again on Saturday night in York's next-to-last game before the postseason.

Chris Nowak lined a two-run double to left field in the top of the first handing York an early lead. It also made Nowak the Revs' single-season RBI record-holder with 106 on the season, breaking the previous record of 105 set by Jason Aspito in 2008. The Revs were unable to take further advantage of a shaky first inning by Scott Kazmir, however, leaving the bases loaded.

Kazmir took a no-decision, walking six in 4.2 innings, but allowing only those two runs and surrendering just three hits.

Revs starter Corey Thurman took a shutout into the sixth, and escaped his only jam in the second inning when he left the bases loaded after allowing three singles. But on his only mistake of the night, Ofilio Castro nailed a two-run homer to left-center on Thurman's final pitch of the evening, tying the game at 2-2 with two outs in the sixth. It denied Thurman a chance at becoming the Revs' first 15-game winner, as he ends his regular season with a club record 14 victories, currently tied for the league lead.

The Revs retook the lead in the eighth scoring three times with two outs. Salomon Manriquez ripped a go-ahead RBI double to right-center, extending his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games, the league's longest active streak, and tied for the Revs' longest of the year. David Espinosa then followed with a mammoth two-run homer down the right field line, giving York a 5-2 lead. It was the fourth home run hit to right field in four games in the series by Revs hitters, after the entire league combined to hit just three homers to right at Constellation Field all season before this week.

Sugar Land loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, scoring an unearned run on an Octavio Martinez single to cut the lead to 5-3, but setup man R.J. Rodriguez whiffed Iggy Suarez to leave the bases loaded and keep the lead intact.

Ricardo Gomez found himself in a jam in the ninth after a single and a walk with one out, but retired Jason Lane on a double play to end the game, with Nowak starting the twin-killing by making a superb backhanded pick on a sharply hit short-hop at third base.

Reliever Mike Benacka (1-0) picked up his first Revs win with a perfect seventh inning. Sugar Land's Roberto Giron (1-3) suffered the loss. Gomez' save was his 17th of the season, one shy of matching the club record.

At 78-60, the Revs are a season-best 18 games over .500.

York 's Derrick Gordon (4-3, 4.29) will face Sugar Land's Michael Nix (4-10, 5.00) on Saturday night at 8:05 p.m. ET. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350 and Shoutcast.com (YorkRevs) beginning at 7:45 p.m. ET with Darrell Henry on the call.
