Third Period Goes Awry as \'Bugs Fall at Texas
December 31, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX - The Texas Brahmas scored two goals in a 21-second span of the third period to take the lead for good in a 4-2 defeat of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Friday night at the NyTex Sports Centre. The âBugs have dropped three straight games against the rival Brahmas and now trail the season series 3-2 against Texas.
David Rutherford scored both Mudbugs goals, including the second one which tied the game at two in the third prior to the quick strikes by Texas. Rutherford becomes the first player in the CHL to score 20 goals this season, a total which also sets a new career high for him. The Brahmas won the special teams battle for the night, going 2 for 4 on their own powerplay while holding the âBugs scoreless on three chances.
Texas held an 8-4 shot advantage after one period, but the Mudbugs led 1-0 on the scoreboard through 20 minutes. All-Star David Rutherford beat Jeff Harvey with a wrist shot from the high slot midway through the period to reach the first 20-goal season of his three year pro carer.
The Brahmas tied the game with a powerplay goal at 12:47 of the second period however as Greg Hogeboom stickhandled through the defense and backhanded a perfect shot over Brian Foster's blocker to make it 1-1. Mitch Love and Dan Reidel then capped off the period with a fight as the teams remained tied heading into the locker room.
Tyler Allen's first of the night at 3:52 of the third put Texas ahead for the first time in the game, but Rutherford's second goal on another long shot through traffic during a delayed Brahmas penalty tied the game back up at two.
The home club re-took the lead less than three minutes later when Allen deflected a long Chad Woollard shot past Foster, who was without his goal stick after a scramble in front. Calin Wild then sent a pass into the slot that deflected off a skate and into the net just 21 seconds later to put the Brahmas ahead 4-2.
Texas fought off the âBugs late charge to hand Brian Foster (8-5-0) his fifth loss of the season after the rookie made 21 saves. Former Mudbug Jeff Harvey stopped 25 shots on the way to his third win since joining the Brahmas. Bossier-Shreveport outshot Texas 27-25 in the contest.
The Mudbugs will now return home to ring in the New Year at the CenturyTel Center tomorrow night against the Mississippi RiverKings at 7:05. On the first day of 2011, the Mudbugs will also retire the jersey of #11 Jason "Soupy" Campbell, a longtime player and current General Manager for the team.
Don't miss this great rivalry hockey game, a celebration of a great Mudbug and your only chance to catch the âBugs at home for the next three weeks tomorrow night at the CTC!
Mini-plans and group ticket packages for all Mudbugs home games are available through the Mudbugs office at 752-BUGS. Individual tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster at 318-741-9700, online at www.ticketmaster.com or at the CenturyTel Center main box office.
