Lancaster Stormers News Release

The chance for a first half championship still exists for the Lancaster Barnstormers.

Gabe Jacobo went 3-for-4, and the pitchers held a one-run lead for six innings as the Barnstormers remained alive in the race with a 4-3 victory over the York Revolution Friday evening. The game was played in front of 8,294, the third largest crowd in Clipper Magazine Stadium history.

York's lead over the Barnstormers dropped to 1 1/2 games with two games left in the series. Lancaster must win both plus a July 30 makeup game at Somerset to take the first half.

The Barnstormers staked Dan Osterbrock (6-2) to a 1-0 lead with a spray of four two-out singles in the bottom of the first inning with Jacobo singling home Cole Garner with the run.

Osterbrock had his only rough inning in the second. The lefty walked Chad Tracy to start the inning and threw a wild pitch to move him to second. York then produced three consecutive one-out RBI hits. Ofilio Castro singled into center to plate Tracy and took second on Garner's throw home. Travis Garcia flared a hit into left as Castro scored. Again, Garcia took second on a throw to the plate. Salvador Paniagua followed with an RBI double to the gap in left center for a 3-1 lead. The jam got worse as catcher Juan Apodaca made a wild throw to first on a dropped third strike to Sean Smith. Smith stole second, but Osterbrock retired Justin Greene on a bouncer to shortstop Lance Zawadzki at the edge of the infield for the second out. Wilson Valdez flied out to center to end the inning.

Osterbrock only faced one batter over the minimum for the next four innings, giving his team the chance to come back.

The Barnstormers did in the bottom of the third. Andrew Clark led off with a single poked into center. Jacobo then took Jorge Martinez (4-3) into the left field corner for a double. Clark was sent home and scored when Paniagua was unable to maintain control of the relay throw. Jacobo took third on the play at the plate and scored on an ensuing ground ball by Wilson Batista.

One out later, Apodaca was hit by a pitch. Casey Frawley walked, and Zawadzki delivered the lead run with a ground single into center.

Manager Butch Hobson pulled Osterbrock following a one-out single by Paniagua and a walk to Sean Smith. Jason Richardson got out of the jam with two ground balls, and Ross Peeples retired the side in order on three ground balls in the eighth.

Jason Urquidez was put to the test in the ninth inning. Ofilio Castro reached on a leadoff dribbler up the third base line, and Travis Garcia had a foul pop up dropped by Jacobo near the first base bag. The Lancaster closer took things into his own hands from there, striking out the side for his 11th save. The two clubs meet again Saturday evening with fireworks to follow the game. Lancaster will send Cory Wade (2-1) to the hill for his first start of the season against left-hander Alain Quijano (6-4).
