Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Somerset, NJ) - The Bridgeport Bluefish were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 7-5 on Friday evening at TD Bank Ballpark.

Somerset scored twice in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead on first baseman Ty Wright's RBI walk and catcher Damaso Espino's RBI single. Bridgeport's designated hitter J.R. Towles led off the top of the second inning with a single and after first baseman Luis Lopez struck out, left fielder Denny Almonte hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 2-2. The Patriots scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 7-2 lead, highlighted by left fielder Cory Harrilchak's RBI single and third baseman Brian Barden's two-run single. Bridgeport would respond in the top of the third inning with a three-run home run by right fielder Prentice Redman, cutting Somerset's lead to 7-5.

That would be all the offense that either team would have for the rest of the evening, as Bridgeport's pitching allowed just two hits after the second inning. However the 'Fish would fall to Somerset despite out-hitting the Patriots 10-6. Somerset's starting pitcher Gary Moran (6-3) would earn the victory despite giving up five runs in off seven hits in five innings pitched and Jon Hunton would pick up his 22nd save of the season for the Patriots after pitching a scoreless top of the ninth inning. Jesse English (0-1) started for Bridgeport and gave up four runs in one plus innings pitched while allowing six walks in the loss. Matt Sommo gave up three runs in four innings after coming in to relieve English in the second inning while Joe Bateman, Jaye Chapman and Tim Gustafson each pitched scoreless frames for Bridgeport.

Bridgeport will play game two of the three-game series against the Somerset Patriots on Saturday, July 5th, with first pitch at 7:05pm. The 'Fish return to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, July 7th to begin a three-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
