Third Inning Singles Chain Carries Barnstormers To Victory

August 13, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers and Road Warriors played just enough baseball on Monday evening for the Barnstormers to rack up an 8-1 victory over the travel squad in the opener of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Play was halted after 4 1/2 innings due to persistent showers and an already drenched playing surface.

With the win, the Barnstormers extended their wild card leads to 6 1/2 games over New Britain and eight games over York. First half champion Sugar Land currently leads the Freedom Division by 5 1/2 games, opening up a wild card slot.

Lancaster burst out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning with eight consecutive singles. Carlos Garcia started the chain with a liner to the right of second baseman Melvin Rodriguez. Garcia took second on a passed ball and third when Rico Noel beat out a bunt that died between home plate and the pitcher's mound.

Darian Sandford drove in the first run off Alfredo Rodriguez (1-2) with a single up the middle. Josh Bell drilled a hit into the right field corner to bring across another. Blake Gailen yanked a base hit down the line. Jimmy Paredes scorched a base hit into right. Ryan Casteel barely missed a homer to right center, settling for a long single instead. K.C. Hobson completed the chain with the sixth consecutive RBI hit, the fourth straight coming with runners at first and third.

With rains approaching the field, the Barnstormers cranked up the offense again in the fourth inning. Noel singled to left and, with one out, stole second. Bell struck out looking for the second out. Reliever Julio DePaula nailed Gailen with a pitch, adding a second runner. Paredes drove home both with a slicing liner into the left field corner.

As Casteel was stepping in for his turn at the plate, words were exchanged between him and Road Warriors catcher Isaac Wenrich. Both were tossed from the game by home plate umpire Derek Moccia.

De Paula got out of the inning after play resumed. A frustrated Road Warriors club finally scored off Joe Gardner (4-8) in the top of the fifth on a single by Edwin Gomez, a double to right by Daniel Aldrich and Anthony Ray's grounder to first. Gardner had induced four double plays, three on the ground, over the first four innings.

The two clubs meet again on Tuesday evening. Lancaster will send left-hander Nate Reed (9-3) to the mound. Reed needs two strikeouts to become the Barnstormers' career leader, passing manager Ross Peeples. The Road Warriors will counter with right-hander Mike Lee (2-8).

NOTES: Lancaster has won 10 of its last 14 games...Fourteen of the last 24 game dates have been affected by rain...Paredes is 11-for-18 in the last five games, boosting his average to .345...Gailen extended his hitting streak to eight games...He tied Sugar Land's Courtney Hawkins for the league RBI lead with 72, one ahead of Long Island's Travis Snider...Overall, there were six double plays in nine half-innings...Gardner notched his first win since June 8.
