Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Bethpage, NY.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (10-20) dropped the series opener against the Long Island Ducks (22-11) 5-4, with the lead trading hands throughout the night.
The offense got started early, as Ryan Strausborger drew a walk to lead off the game, moving to third on a single from Edwin Garcia. A fielder's choice from Teodoro Martinez brought home Strausborger to open the scoring on the night.
David Washington responded with a solo homerun in the bottom of the second, evening things up at 1-1. The Blue Crabs offense responded with a run in the top of the third. Francisco Rosario led off the inning with a double, before Matt Larkins struck out Strausborger for the first out in the inning. Garcia came through once again with a single, scoring Rosario from second to retake the lead.
Long Island bounced back to score a pair in the bottom of the third. A strikeout started the frame, before back-to-back walks and a wild pitch put runners on the corners with one out. A stolen base moved Jordany Valdespin to second, allowing both him and Dan Lyons to score on a single from Daniel Fields to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead.
After a scoreless fourth, things picked back up in the top of the fifth. Martinez singled to start the inning, advancing to second on an error by the pitcher on the play. A single from Devon Rodriguez moved Martinez up to third, with a walk to Frank Martinez loading the bases with nobody out. A fielder's choice from Angelys Nina scored Teodoro Martinez to tie the game. Angelo Songco followed that with a ground rule double to score Rodriguez, giving Southern Maryland the lead back.
The Ducks kept the scoring going in their half of the inning, beginning with a leadoff Valdespin walk. Valdespin advanced to second on a passed ball before a Fields single put runners on the corners for Travis Snider. Snider punched a single into right field, scoring Valdespin to the tie the game at four, spelling the end of Marshall's evening. Southpaw Drake Britton came in relief with two on and two down. Britton fanned the first batter he faced, and subsequently induced Taylor Ard into an inning ending double-play.
Southern Maryland was held scoreless in the top of the sixth against the Ducks first reliever of the night, Lorenzo Barcelo (2-0). The Blue Crabs sent Paul Clemens (1-8) to the mound for the bottom half of the inning. A one-out walk issued to Ramon Cabrera was followed by a wild pitch, putting Cabrera in scoring position. Clemens fanned the next batter he faced, but then walked Lyons to put two runners on base. Valdespin came up with a RBI single to break the tie, putting the Ducks ahead 5-4.
The bullpens traded scoreless seventh and eighth innings to send the Blue Crabs offense out for their final chance in the top of the ninth against Francisco Rodriguez (S,22). Rodriguez cracked a one-out single into right field and stood on first representing the tying run. Frank Martinez flew out to left, leaving the game in the hands of Nina. Nina worked a seven-pitch at-bat before being put out on a drop third strike to end the ballgame 5-4.
The Blue Crabs return to action Tuesday, August 14th for the second game in the series against the Ducks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Tuesday at Bethpage Ballpark.
