Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Charleston, SC- Delmon Young had three hits including his 21st home run of the season and fifth of the homestand, as Charleston defeated Lexington 8-1 Monday at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Charleston moved into a first place tie in the Southern Division due to Capital City's 10-2 loss to Lakewood Monday night.
The RiverDogs (66-47 overall, 26-18 second half) finished six and two for the homestand, and earned a split of the four game series with the Legends (57-56, 20-24).
Young's homer, a two-run blast to right field in the bottom of the first inning, gave Charleston a lead they would not relinquish. The top overall pick in last year's June Draft has now hit safely in 14 of 15 games, and is batting .400 over that span with seven homers and 22 runs batted in. His 96 RBI currently ranks him third in Charleston's single-season list, and he needs just three more to set the record for most RBI in a season by a Charleston player.
Young was not the only RiverDog who went deep Monday night. Jason Pridie launched a two-run blast, his 14th of the season, off the matrix board in right-center field to give Charleston a 4-1 lead in the second inning.
Colt Simmons also homered in the game, driving a fastball off Lexington starter Rory Shortell (1-3) over the scoreboard in left field. It was Simmons' second homer of the year, and it came in his first start after missing a week of action due to an injured right knee.
Elliot Johnson and Josh Touchstone each had RBI hits for the RiverDogs, who improved their home mark to 32-30 in 2004.
On the mound, Jino Gonzalez (9-5) delivered his second straight victory, allowing a first inning run before shutting down the Legends the rest of the way. Gonzalez allowed six hits in seven strong innings, walking one and striking out seven.
Brian Bulger and Scott Vandermeer each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Charleston. After a day off Tuesday, the RiverDogs hit the road for an eight-game trip beginning Wednesday in Hickory, NC. The RiverDogs and Crawdads are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday night, with Tony Peguero (9-6) taking the mound for Charleston, and Josh Shortslef (10-4) going to the hill for the Crawdads.
The RiverDogs return to Riley Park August 19 to begin a four-game series with the Asheville Tourists.
Tickets for all RiverDogs home games are available in person at the Riley Park Box Office, by phone at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) and online at etix.com and riverdogs.com.
