August 9, 2004 - South Atlantic League (SAL1) News Release
Pitcher of the Week
Bob Cramer â Charleston RiverDogs
Cramer was outstanding, sporting a 2-0 record and a 0.00 ERA covering 7 1/3rd innings. He fanned five and did not yield a walk, while holding opponents to a .125 batting average. The 24-year old southpaw pitched two scoreless innings of middle relief last Friday against Augusta. Cramer did all he could to keep his club in the game, allowing just one hit and striking out one batter in a two-inning, middle-relief stint, but his club was never able to recover. On Monday, he appeared once again and shut down the Charleston-WV Alley Cats on just two hits in three innings of work. His final appearance of the week was Thursday night, once again versus the Alley Cats. Trailing 1-0, Cramer got out of a bases-loaded two-out jam in the sixth inning by enticing a fielder's choice ground-out. He went on to pitch two more innings of shutout relief, not allowing a hit and striking out one batter during his stint. It was enough to give the RiverDogs an opportunity to score the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and win the game, 2-1.
Batter of the Week
Kevin Kouzmanoff âLake County Captains
The 23-year old Kouzmanoff had a torrid week, leading the league in batting (.444), hits (12) and finished tied for the league lead in RBI with 10. In addition, he had a rather impressive on-base-percentage of .464, slugging percentage of .667 and scored five runs. Kouzmanoff started the week in grand style, going 4-for-5 in a 6-5 loss to Hickory Friday night. He homered and drove three runs, albeit in a loss. He had a hit in each of his next three games, before going 2-for-5 with a grand slam en route to a 10-2 drubbing of Ashville Wednesday evening. He went 3-for-4 Thursday night, but the Captains were not able to hold off the Tourists, 4-3. Overall, thanks to Kouzmanoff's offensive accomplishments, the Captains won four of their six games. Kouzmanoff is having a great year, batting .321 and among the top five batters in the league in that category. In addition, he has contributed 12 home runs and 74 RBI.
