ROYALS PRE-GAME NOTES -

Tonight, the Royals visit Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, New York, to face the Adirondack Thunder. This is the seventh game of the year between Reading and Adirondack-and the third time that the Royals have faced the Thunder in the team's last four games.

The first two games in this most recent sequence between Reading and Adirondack have both ended regulation time in a tie. Last Friday, it was the Royals who got the better of things with an overtime game winner off the stick of Jesper Pettersson (2-1). On Tuesday here in Glens Falls, however, it was the Thunder who took the two points- after a scoreless OT-by bagging both of their shots in the shootout, while goaltender J.P. Anderson stopped two of the three attempts by Reading in the skills competition. o

Reading, who has compiled a record of 4-1-0-1 so far against the Thunder, will play Adirondack a total of eleven times this season-more than any other opponent with the exception of the Norfolk Admirals against whom the Royals will also play eleven times. Six of Reading's games against the Thunder will be at Santander Arena in Reading-and five will be played here in Glens Falls (2-3).

-

This is the second season in the ECHL for Thunder in Glens Falls. Historically, Reading faced Adirondack a total of eighteen times, and the Royals compiled a record of 9-7-0-2 against the Thunder, going 4-3-0-2 in the nine games so far played here at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

o

Adirondack is a continuation of the ECHL membership that used to be based in Stockton, California-a team also known as the Thunder. Prior to the start of the 2015-16 season, the Thunder moved from Stockton to Glens Falls, while an American Hockey League team, then known as the Adirondack Flames, who had played in Glens Falls for one season (2014-15)-moved to Stockton and changed their name to the "Heat".

The Thunder and Stockton Heat are both part of the affiliation chain of the Calgary Flames of the NHL. o

The Thunder was based in Stockton for ten years (2005-15). Prior to that, this ECHL membership was based in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and was known as the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies from 2001-05. Prior to that, the membership was based in Birmingham, Alabama from 1992 through 2001 and played as the Birmingham Bulls.

And, for two seasons (1990 - 92), this membership played as the Cincinnati Cyclones at what is now US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. o

While this membership was based in Stockton, the Royals played the Thunder three times in the regular season and went 3-0-0-0 in those games. Reading also faced Stockton in the 2013 Kelly Cup Championship Finals, defeating them four games to one to capture the Cup. o

Reading played the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies thirty-seven times in team history, going 12-19-6 against Bullies when they played at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Convention Hall.

-

The point picked up by the Royals shootout loss to Adirondack on Tuesday pushed Reading into sole possession of second place in the North Division with a record of 22-14-1-2=47. o

The Royals are 7-3-0-1 in the team's last eleven games and have gone 16-6-0-1 in the last twenty-three.

-

Although Reading fell behind to the Thunder 16:21 into Tuesday's game, the Royals battled back to take the lead (albeit a rather short-lived one) at 2-1 after a power play goal by Robbie Czarnik 4:04 into the second and a goal by Derik Johnson with just 5:04 remaining in regulation. Twenty-one seconds after Johnson's goal, the Thunder re-tied the game at two and ended up winning the game in the shootout. o

Despite holding the lead for only twenty-one seconds in Tuesday's SOL, technically that game was the Royals' ninth "blown lead loss" of the season. o

Tuesday's game marked the second time this season that Reading has suffered a blown lead loss to the Thunder. The Royals actually held two leads (at 1-0 and 2-1) in the 4-2 loss to Adirondack at Santander Arena on January 6.

-

Tuesday's game marked the fourth time this season that Reading has played to a tie after sixty minutes of hockey. Overall, the Royals have gone 1-3 in the games that have gone beyond regulation time this year, winning the lone tie (in overtime) on home ice and dropping all three (one in overtime and two in the shootout) on the road. o

Historically, Reading has played 206 (of the team's 1119 total played-18.4%) regular season games in the sixteen year history of the team that have ended regulation time in a tie. Overall, Reading has won 98 of those games and lost 108 (50-51 at home; and 48-57 on the road).

-

The Royals have lost both games played so far this season that have gone to the shootout, bagging one of the seven shootout attempts the team has taken, which translates into a 14.3% scoring ratio (twenty-third in the league). The Thunder scored on both of their shootout attempts on Tuesday (by Greg Wolfe and James Henry). Reading's goaltenders have stopped just three of the six shootout attempts the team has faced, which is a .500 save percentage (tied for last in the league). o

Matt Willows shooting second on Tuesday here in Glens Falls is the lone shooter for the Royals to bag his shootout attempt this season. o

Goaltender Martin Ouellette fell in his first shootout of the season for Reading on Tuesday.

Historically, Ouellette is 3-2 in five shootouts with the Royals in three seasons with the Royals. (He did not see action in a shootout last season; but in the 2014-15 season, he went 3-1 for Reading in the skills competition, including a 2-1 win shootout win over the Florida Everblades on February 8, 2015, when he stopped 8 of the 9 shootout attempts he faced). -

Ouellette has stopped 18 of the 26 shootout shots he's faced as a Royal, which is a .692 save percentage. o

Historically, the Royals have played in 122 total games that have gone to the skills competition for resolution; and Reading has compiled a record of 59-63 in those games (31-33 on home ice and 28-30 on the road). o

Over the last two seasons, Reading's shooters have gone 2 for 27 in the skills competition (7.4%). Historically, the Royals have made 191 of the 601 (31.8%) of the shootout attempts the team has taken. The opposition has scored at a 34.2% ratio on Royals goaltender, making 207 of the 606 shootout attempts taken.

-

Reading went 1-2 on the power play on Tuesday. After getting blanked in four straight games (and sixteen consecutive chances with the power play) (January 6 - 14, 2017), the Royals have scored at least one power play goal in three of the last four games, going four for nine (44.4%) during that time span.

-

Reading killed off all four of Adirondack's chances with the man advantage-including twelve seconds of five-on-three-on Tuesday. That was the nineteenth time this season that Reading's PK has blanked the opposition (12-6-0-1). o

The Royals have killed 59 of the last 63 power play chances the team has faced over the last eighteen games, which is a 93.7% kill ratio.

-

Robbie Czarnik scored his thirteenth goal of the season while the Royals were on the power play to tie Tuesday's game at one 4:04 into the second period. o

For Czarnik, who has eight goals (and eighteen points) in his last twelve games, that was his fifth power play goal of the year, second on the team to Olivier Labelle (6g).

-

Derik Johnson's goal at the 5:04 mark of the third period, which gave Reading a 2-1 lead, was his fourth of the year for Reading in his thirty-ninth game with the team. Last season, Johnson scored one goal in fifty games with the Royals.

-

Matt Wilkins extended his personal point streak to six games (3g-5a=8pts) and his assist streak to four (4a) when he picked up an assist on the power play goal by Robbie Czarnik on Tuesday.

-

Ryan Penny, who picked up the primary assist on Czarnik's PPG, has twenty points (7g-13a) in his last twenty-three played.

-

Justin Crandall, who has eleven points (3g-8a) in six games against Adirondack, recorded the primary assist on Johnson's third period goal. Crandall, who leads the Royals with twenty-two assists, has thirty-two points (12g-20a) in his last twenty-three games.

-

Ian Watters, who picked up a helper on Johnson's third period goal, played his 167th game as a Royal on Tuesday, which is one behind Rob LaLonde for sixth most all time.

-

Goaltender Martin Ouellette has started four consecutive games for Reading-and five of the last six played (and has actually been the goaltender of record in six straight). Ouellette has held the opposition to two goals or less (in regulation time, at least) in his last five consecutive starts, allowing just nine total goals against in those games.
