ECHL Idaho Steelheads

Game Day Storylines- at Alaska

January 27, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

Steel Reel

The Steelheads saw their five-game road points streak snapped on Wednesday night, when the Alaska Aces scored two third-period goals en route to a 4-3 victory at Sullivan Arena. Idaho will look to bounce back on Friday night in the second game of this three-game set, their fourth consecutive road game. The Steelheads are 4-2-1 this season against the Aces.

The Steelheads jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Wednesday with early goals from Kyle Jean and Anthony Luciani, but the score was tied at the end of 40 minutes after goals from Mackenze Stewart and Peter Sivak. Idaho again led early in the third period after Andre Morrissette netted his first goal of the season, but Daniel Moynihan and Nolan Descoteaux would answer again for the Aces to guide them to a 4-3 win. Branden Komm, making his third consecutive start, stopped 35 shots.

Penalty Trouble...

The Steelheads will certainly make an effort to stay out of the box in the series' second contest as opposed to Wednesday's opener. The Steelheads had numerous offensive chances at 5-on-5 but were outshot 16-12 in the second period when they were shorthanded three times and faced a lengthy 5-on-3 disadvantage, on which Alaska scored their power play goal. Nolan Descoteaux's eventual game-winner also came one second after an Idaho penalty in the third period had expired. The Steelheads were whistled for two delay of game penalties for the puck put over the glass, one helmet violation penalty, and a 10-minute misconduct that held defenseman Corbin Baldwin off the ice for the first half of the third period. The Aces power play has not been overpowering this season, ranked 20th in the league, but more time spent 5-on-5 would allow Idaho to stay on the attack on Friday.

12 and Counting...

Anthony Luciani scored again on Wednesday night to extend his points streak to 12 games, the longest active points streak in the ECHL. Luciani has scored eight goals and added nine assists during his streak, the longest by a Steelhead since Alex Belzile notched a point in 12 straight games ending on April 1, 2015. Mitch Wahl had a 14-game streak ending on December 7th of 2013.

Sights On Sivak...

In 2013-14, Peter Sivak was named to the ECHL's First All-Star Team after scoring 31 goals in 67 games. On Wednesday, Sivak's 5-on-3 power play goal past Brandon Komm was his 31st goal in just his 39th game this year. Sivak leads the ECHL in goal-scoring and is just one goal shy of the league's high-water mark from all of last season, when Jack Downing and Jesse Mychan netted 32. The Steelheads will also need to monitor rookie Daniel Moynihan, who has 12 goals this season but has scored five in seven games against Idaho.
