Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - On Tuesday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium, the Cougars (23-9) rebounded after last night's loss; beating the South Bend Silver Hawks (9-20), 7-4. The win avoided a second straight defeat at home for the Cougars, which hasn't happened all season. Kane County continues to post the best record in the Midwest League, and they've spent the last 19 days alone in first place.
The name of today's game was solid relief pitching and timely hitting. John Baker gave the Cougars the lead for good, with a third inning two-out RBI single. Kory Wayment (2-for-4) gave the home team a 6-2 advantage, pulling a two-run double down the third base line. Starter, Cristian Gonzalez left the game with two outs in the fifth, to pick up the no-decision. Chris Shank (4-0) entered the game, worked 2 1/3 innings to earn the win, and improve the relievers record to 9-1. South Bend starter, Sam Taulli (0-2) allowed seven hits and three runs to suffer the loss for the Silver Hawks. Nelson Cruz capped off the scoring in the seventh, blasting his 9th home run (league leader) of the season off Heith Heiberger.
Jeff Muessig worked two scoreless innings to close out the game, and earn his sixth save of the season. Muessig is six-for-six in save opportunities and is scoreless in 15 innings pitched.
The Cougars lit up the scoreboard first, scoring twice in the second inning. Francis Gomez (2-for-4) lined a two-run double down the left line, plating home Jason Basil and Brant Colamarino (2-for-4) - both had singles. South Bend tied the game at two in the third inning against Gonzalez. Nelson Teilon and Jerry Gill began the inning with singles, and later scored on RBI's from Neb Brown and Dan Callahan.
The Cougars and Silver Hawks play game three of their series on Wednesday night at Elfstrom Stadium - game time is 6:00 PM. Drew Dickinson LHP (4-1, 2.57) makes his seventh start of the season for the Cougars; Dustin Nippert RHP (2-1, 1.97) gets the starting nod for South Bend.
