Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â Matt Brown drove in one run for the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Tuesday night. But it was the pair of runs that scored after his two errors that proved costly to the Kernels.
Dayton broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning with a pair of unearned runs and held on to beat the Kernels, 5-4, before a paid crowd of 1,452 at New Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The loss was a season-high fifth straight for the Kernels (16-15), who dropped into fourth place in the Midwest League's Western Division.
Quan Cosby had three of the Kernels' 10 hits. Erick Aybar and Alberto Callaspo had two hits apiece.
Dayton took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on two singles, a balk and a pair of sacrifice flies.
The Kernels tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the second inning. Albert Callaspo and Caleb Maher spanked back-to-back singles leading off the frame. Callaspo scored on Alex Dvorsky's sacrifice fly and Maher scored on Matt Brown's single.
Dayton reclaimed the lead, 4-2, with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning. The Dragons had two hits in the inning, but a pair of errors by Brown, the Kernels' third baseman, kept the inning alive and led to both runs.
A walk, single and hit batsman loaded the bases with one out in the Kernels fifth. But the Kernels managed only one run, on Jared Abruzzo's ground out to second base, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
A sacrifice fly by Junior Ruiz stretched Dayton's lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning.
The Kernels scratched across a run in the seventh inning to pull within 5-4. Erick Aybar singled and went from first to third base on a wild pitch by Dayton's Matt McWilliams. Aybar scored when the throw to third base from catcher Miguel Perez skipped into left field.
Dayton reliever Todd Coffey slammed the door shut on the Kernels, setting them down in order in the eighth and ninth innings for his fourth save.
Brett Cimorelli, making a spot start in place of the injured James Holcomb, worked the first three innings for the Kernels and gave up five hits and two runs.
Dayton had 13 hits. Dominoque Lewis had four hits and Mak Schramek had three.
Jeff Marquez (2-2) took the loss for the Kernels.
