The Lewis Family's Home Run for Life
June 24, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
South Bend Cubs News Release
Marvin, Naudia and Kendra Lewis are connected, not only because they are siblings, but also because of the life-long fight they are each battling with sickle cell anemia.
At 13, Marvin has already had 3 brain surgeries. He's been diagnosed with Dactylitis, Moya Moya disease and goes in for chronic blood transfusions every month. Today, he has limited mobility on the left side of his body after a stroke in 2017.
Even-though Yolanda and her husband live in Gary, they make the journey each week to Beacon Children's Hospital in South Bend for treatment.
"As a mom, to have someone to interact with kids while they are there - in my heart I know they are taken care of," said Yolanda.
Just like her older brother, Naudia is battling sickle cell anemia and Moya Moya disease. While her symptoms are not as severe as Marvin's, she does take medicine to stop her immune system from fighting off the blood transfusions she receives every month.
The youngest of those three, Kendra is six years old. She also faced difficulty because of sickle cell anemia and influenza A and B followed by pneumonia.
Yolanda says the kids pull strength both from their mother and each other, and she thanks the staff at Beacon for helping her kids not only survive, but thrive.
"Beacon is the reason my kids are still alive," said Yolanda.
