South Bend Cubs News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The Cubs ended the first half of the season with an extra innings walk-off homer last night and then came out firing on all cylinders Friday night in the first game of the second half. South Bend won for the third straight night and once again came back from an early hole. The home side trailed 3-1 through two innings and scored 12 of the last 13 runs in front of a season high crowd of 7,704.
It was a shaky start for the Cubs, especially for the defense which committed four errors early in the game. Kohl Franklin gave up a run in the first inning and two in the second before tossing a scoreless third and final frame on the night for the tall righty.
Fabian Pertuz and Yeison Santana started the game with singles for South Bend and the Cubs got their first run on a balk from Dionys Rodriguez.
In the fourth inning the Cubs struck for three, took the lead, and never looked back. Three straight base hits, topped off by a two-run Owen Caissie double gave South Bend their first lead.
Two innings later the Cubs added another three-spot. Santana knocked a double down the left field line and came around to score on a Caleb Knight double, the second of four hits on a career night for the former Virginia Cavalier. Two batters later Jake Washer launched his second homer in as many games and his seventh of the season.
After Peoria got a run back to make it 7-4, the Cubs ran away with the game in the sixth. Knight picked up another double, this one plating both Pertuz and Santana. The first five batters in the lineup tonight all tallied multiple hits. Caissie added another double, driving in Knight to make it 11-4.
The final blow was a Yohendrick Pinango two-run blast that left the bat at 104 m.p.h. in the seventh to finish off a night in which the Cubs knocked off the Chiefs for the ninth time in their 10 matchups this season.
Knight's four-hit game was the first of his career and represented the fourth time in the last five game the Cubs have had a player register four hits in a game.
The Cubs and the Chiefs meet again Saturday at 7:05 ET.
