7:05 p.m. l Radio: Fox Sports 980 WONE
Lake County Captains (0-0, 35-31) at Dayton Dragons (0-0, 39-27)
LH Rodney Boone (0-1, 6.23) vs. RH Christian Roa (1-3, 5.48)
Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) host the Lake County Captains (affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians) at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District. Tonight's game is the fifth in a seven-game series and the first game of the second half in the Midwest League's split-season format.
Season Series vs. Lake County: Dayton 8, Lake County 7. Current Series: Lake County 3, Dayton 1. The Dragons in the current series are batting .188, averaging 1.5 runs per game, with one home run, a 6.55 team ERA, and two errors.
Historically Speaking: The Dragons first half winning percentage of .591 (record of 39-27) was the second best in franchise history, trailing the 2007 Dragons that finished 44-26. Their record was the fourth best in any half in Dragons history (also trailing 2011 second half record of 48-22 and 2001 second half of 41-28).
Dragons in the Standings: Dayton finished the first half in second place, one game behind Great Lakes.
What Happened? Entering a doubleheader on June 9, the Dragons were 36-15 (best record in franchise history after 51 games) and held a lead of eight and one-half games over second place Great Lakes with 15 to play. At the time, Dayton had not lost more than two consecutive games all season. How did they lose that lead?
The Dragons went 3-11 over the next 14 games while Great Lakes went 12-1 over the same period, a difference of nine and one-half games as the Loons clinched the division title...Since June 9, the Dragons have averaged 3.3 runs per game (last in the league)...Dragons hitters have struck out 178 times in 15 games since June 9 (most in Minor League Baseball by 15; most in the MWL by 42)...In their 12 losses since June 9, the Dragons batted with men in scoring position .118 (13 for 110)...Meanwhile, the Dragons team ERA since June 9 is 5.34 (next to last in the league)...Dragons pitchers have allowed 78 walks since June 9 (fourth most in Minor League Baseball, most in the MWL by 17)...The Dragons lead Minor League Baseball in losses since June 9 with 12.
What's Next: The 66-game second half begins tonight. The Dragons could qualify for the playoffs in one of two ways: 1) By winning the second half East Division title; 2) By finishing with the next best full-season record in the East Division (behind Great Lakes) should Great Lakes win the second half division title. If the same team wins both halves, the team with the next best full-season record qualifies as the second half representative.
Last Game: Thursday: Lake County 7, Dayton 0. The Captains hit three home runs and shutout the Dragons for the second straight game. Dayton went 0 for 8 with men in scoring position. Nick Quintana had went 2 for 4 with a double. J.V. Martinez was also 2 for 4.
Team Notes
Dayton is second in the MWL in home runs with 75 (one behind Cedar Rapids). The Dragons lead the league in slugging percentage at .414. However, the Dragons lead the league in strikeouts (their total of 773 is third most in Minor League Baseball).
Player Notes
Elly De La Cruz (seventh youngest position player in the league with at least 100 AB) over his last 25 games is batting .327 with seven home runs and 20 RBI. De La Cruz is first in the MWL slugging percentage (.571), second in extra base hits (31), tied for second in RBI (43), and fourth in home runs (13).
Joe Boyle has an earned run average of 0.72 and opponent's batting average of .089 on the year. Both figures would lead all Minor League Baseball, but he is two innings short of the minimum number to qualify.
Connor Phillips is first in the MWL in strikeouts with 90 and second in opponent batting average (.181). Since April 28, Phillips has made nine starts, posting a 2.34 ERA (50 IP, 13 ER, 20 BB, 69 SO).
