Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings are pleased to announce that Karter Hermenegildo and family of Brandon has been chosen this year's winner of The Home Depot Backyard Rink Contest.

The Hermenegildos were chosen this past weekend from a long list of entries received online at wheatkings.com.

For winning, members of the Wheat Kings will be visiting the Hermenegildos backyard rink next month.

In addition to having the opportunity to meet members of the WHL team in a backyard game of shinny, Karter and his family will receive treats and prizes from The Home Depot.

Currently in his third year of Tim Bits hockey in Brandon, Karter is a member of the Brandon Flyers. An avid soccer, baseball player and golfer, Karter has been on skates since he was three. He currently is helping to teach his younger sister how to skate on the family's backyard rink.

A big fan of the Wheat Kings, Karter also lists the Boston Bruins as his favorite National Hockey League team. He is currently in grade 1 at Ecole Harrison.

Karter spends countless hours on the backyard rink, with both his family and neighbourhood friends.

This year's winning entry was built last fall and has faced a number of seasonal challenges as the mild temperatures forced a lot of extra time and effort in keeping the backyard rink in good condition.

On the ice, the Wheat Kings return home from a 5-game in seven night road trip to play two home games this week - Wednesday night vs Saskatoon and Friday against the Moose Jaw Warriors. Wednesday's game is the final Rain Check game of the season, which means any unused ticket (from Dec. 27th 2015 to Feb. 19th 2016) can be exchanged at the Keystone Centre box office for a "free" ticket to this game (regular box office agency fees apply).
