Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Sauget, Ill. - Behind a four run eighth inning, the Gateway Grizzlies erased a two run deficit and went on to beat the Lake Erie Crushers, 7-5 as the Crushers led for most of the game but fell behind late and could not recover.
With the loss, the Crushers (38-56) lost their final eight series of the season. The Grizzlies (44-50) have now won 14 of their last 17 games with the victory, and are 26-18 since the All-Star Break.
The Crushers put the first run on the board in the back-and-forth affair. Juan Sanchez singled and then stole second. And with two outs, Brendan Costantino hit an RBI single to right field.
In the bottom of the second, the Grizzlies' Blake Brown led off with a double to left field. Tyler Tewell grounded out to second to move Brown to third and another ground out to second off the bat of Grant Buckner, scored Brown to tie the game.
The Crushers would retake the lead in the third inning. Trevor Stevens walked with one out. Emmanuel Quiles hit a groundball to shortstop Seth Heck, who threw to second but Stevens was safe. Quiles beat the throw to first and the Crushers were threatening. With two outs, Juan Sanchez knocked his second single of the game into center field, scoring Stevens.
In the top of the fifth, the Crushers added two more runs, as Quiles singled with one out. Jose Barraza then singled to left, but Quiles was out trying to go from first to third on the hit. Left fielder Cody Livesay threw to the third baseman, Grant Buckner who tagged Quiles out. Sanchez came up and belted his fifth home run of the season, and second of the series, to left field. The two run home run put the Crushers up, 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Grizzlies' shortstop Seth Heck singled with one out. Craig Massoni walked, and with runners on first and second, Ben Waldrip hit an RBI double to deep center field. The double knocked, Crushers starter, Zach Morton out of the game. Trevor Longfellow (5-10) replaced him and threw a wild pitch that allowed Massoni to score and moved Waldrip to third. The Grizzlies stranded the tying runner at third as Longfellow worked through the rest of the inning.
Lake Erie would add a run of insurance in the eighth as Barraza led off and was hit by a pitch. JaVaun West (4-4) then struck out the next two Crushers for the Grizzlies before Chandler Brock came up. Brock hit a line drive to left field where Livesay dove but the ball went under his glove and to the wall. Barraza scored and Brock stopped at second with a double.
The momentum swung in a big way in the bottom of the eighth as the Grizzlies took the lead and never looked back. Brown led off with a single to right and Tewell came up and hit a two run home run. Buckner was then hit by a pitch and Beaird tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt but Longfellow could not get a grip on the ball and everyone was safe on the single. Ryan Johns then came up and also put the ball in play with a bunt when Crushers' pitcher Brad Duffy who took over for Longfellow, picked the ball up and made a high throw to first. Everyone was safe and bases were loaded. Livesay then put down the suicide squeeze bunt to score Buckner. Livesay was the first out of the inning at first base. With Seth Heck batting, Quiles came up throwing after a pitch but the ball went past Costantino at third and into left field. Beaird ran home to give the Grizzlies a two run lead.
Juan Sanchez had three hits and three RBI for the Crushers. Blake Brown also had three hits, including two doubles for the Grizzlies.
Morton went 4 1/3 innings for the Men of Crush, allowing five hits, three runs and three strikeouts. Longfellow picked up the loss by going 2 2/3 innings giving up five hits and four runs. Brad Duffy came on to get three outs in the eighth inning.
Jordan Spencer went five innings, allowing seven hits, four runs and six strikeouts in the start for Gateway. Jordan Wellander threw two scoreless innings. West picked up the win as he pitched in the eighth and ninth innings allowing a run on one hit.
The Crushers will wrap up the series and the 2015 season at GCS Ballpark on Sunday. The Crushers will send left hander Brad Zambron (3-7, 4.45) to the hill. On the other side, the Grizzlies will start right handed pitcher Trevor Richards (5-6, 3.69). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
