The Cup Is Back: New Mexico United to Host Lubbock Matadors in Us Open Cup Third Round
April 5, 2024 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
New Mexico United News Release
Albuquerque, NM - The oldest and most prestigious soccer tournament in the country returns to the Land of Enchantment in less than two weeks. New Mexico United will host NPSL club Lubbock Matadors on April 16th at Rio Rancho High School. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Tickets for the tournament will go on-sale at newmexicoutd.com on Tuesday, April 9th, at 12:00 PM.
"This is a great opportunity to get into a 'win-or-go-home' mindset," said United Head Coach Eric Quill. "Cup play is fun. But, you see it all the time, there's upsets all over the place in this tournament. So, we need to make sure that our mentality is right, and our goal is to win this tournament."
The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is an incredible knockout tournament that includes clubs from across all levels - amateur to MLS - with the intent to crown the best team in America. The winner of the tournament earns a CONCACAF Champions League bid. In 2019, United made it all the way to the Open Cup Quarterfinal - besting MLS opponents Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas along the way.
