Monterey Bay Visits Pioneer Stadium in Hayward for Fixture with Roots SC

HAYWARD, California - Monterey Bay F.C. (1-1-2, 5 points) hits the road to Hayward to take on rival Roots SC (1-2-1, 4 points) in a 7 p.m. PT contest at Pioneer Stadium on Saturday in Week 5 of the 2024 USL Championship regular season. Live streaming of the match will be available on CBS Sports Golazo Network via Paramount+, the CBS Sports app, CBSSports.com, and Pluto TV.

The fifth iteration of this rivalry matchup will take place in Hayward, California on Saturday evening, and Monterey Bay will be looking to bounce back with a big win following its late loss against San Antonio FC last weekend - the Club's first loss of the campaign so far. After Mobi Fehr recorded his first goal of the season to level the match at one apiece just before the half, San Antonio managed to scrape together its second goal of the night in the 87th minute to secure all three points despite the Union's solid, result-deserving performance.

On the other side, Roots SC is coming off of back-to-back losses (three winless in total) to Las Vegas Lights FC and Phoenix Rising FC in which they were outscored by a combined 4-0. After previously winning its first match of the campaign, Roots SC will now aim to springboard its season with a rivalry win at home against Monterey Bay - something the Roots have yet to do. Interestingly enough, through four matches in this rivalry series thus far, the home team on either side is yet to come out victorious.

The previous meeting between Monterey Bay F.C. and Roots SC also took place in Hayward last September. After gaining the lead just three minutes into the match with an Alex Dixon goal on the end of a quick counter, the hosts battled back with a goal of their own just before the half. Monterey Bay then took the lead back in the 64th minute and looked likely to be leaving Hayward with three much-needed points down the stretch of the season, but Neveal Hackshaw had other plans and spoiled the Union's night with a shot that ricocheted off the right post and in to level the match in the final minute. With the new campaign now well underway, both sides will be eager to make their mark on the next chapter of the rivalry this weekend.
