STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Heat scored three goals in the opening eight minutes of the game and never looked back as the Texas Stars lost by a 5-1 final on Wednesday night in front of 2,620 fans at Stockton Arena.
It was the first loss of the season for the Stars (2-1-0-0) and the start of a three-game road trip on the West Coast. Phil Desrosiers made his season debut and stopped 22 of 24 shots in net for the Stars. Austin Fyten scored his first career Texas goal in his first appearance of the season.
Texas visits the Ontario Reign on Friday at 9 p.m. CST to continue their California swing.
Stockton (2-0-0-0) took early control of the game with three goals in the opening eight minutes of the contest. Morgan Klimchuk scored a breakaway goal 2:43 into the game, and Andrew Mangiapane added a power play goal less than four minutes later. Hunter Shinkaruk made it a 3-0 lead for the Heat at 7:41 and that ended the night for Texas starter Maxime Lagace.
Austin Fyten put Texas on the board early in the second for his first of the season, but the Heat answered back with a power play goal at 6:26 to make it a 4-1 score.
Garnet Hathaway tallied Stockton's final goal midway through the third for the 5-1 final.
Lagace suffered the loss in net. Gillies finished with 29 saves in the win for Stockton.
Texas went 0-for-3 on the power play. Stockton was 2-for-5.
