Texas-Sized Fifth Propels Skeeters Past York

(York, Pa.) - Sugar Land sent five runs home in the fifth inning, and that big frame proved to be the difference as the Skeeters took the opener from the York Revolution 9-4 on Friday night at PeoplesBank Park. The Skeeters (13-9) go in front 1-0 in the series and the Revs (13-9) will try and tie it tomorrow night.

Tied 2-2, Josh Prince and Tyson Gillies hit one-out singles and Jeff Dominguez walked to load the bases. Rene Tosoni came up next and hit a long sac fly to center to plate the go-ahead run. After a passed ball got the runners to second and third, Kent Matthes laced a two-out single to score both men. Travis Scott then continued to torment his former club, blasting a two-run home run to right field to make it a five-spot and give the Skeeters a 7-2 lead.

York got a pair back in its half of the fifth when Telvin Nash cracked a towering two-run blast to dead center. Sugar Land would put together one more rally, however, and Tosoni doubled home two runs in the sixth to make up the difference and give the game its final margin.

Parker Frazier (4-0) was the beneficiary of the ample run support, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits in five innings to secure the victory. Beau Vaughan (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing all five runs in the fifth.

The Revs scored first for the ninth straight game with a pair in the second. With one out and a man on second, Keith Castillo slapped a double to left field to break the ice. Two batters later, Jason Repko ripped a single to left to score Castillo and make it 2-0.

Sugar Land got those runs back in the fourth off York starter Tony Pena. Dominguez led off with a home run to right center. Tosoni then lashed a line drive to left center that glanced off the glove of a diving James Simmons and rolled along the warning track, resulting in a triple. After back-to-back strikeouts, Jeremy Barfield found a gap and scored Tosoni with a double to tie the game.

Tosoni led the Skeeter attack, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, run, and three RBIs. Gillies added a pair of hits, while Matthes and Scott plated two apiece.

Repko and Isaias Tejeda each had two hits for the Revs.

Notes: The Revs have now homered in a club-record 11 straight games. Nash's league-leading eighth home run gave him 14 RBIs on the season, one back of tops in the ALPB. Nash is hitting .400 (18-for-45) in 12 home games this season. Tejeda's single in the second extended his hitting streak to seven games, batting .536 (15-for-28) over that span. The Revs will throw James Simmons to counter Sugar Land's Barrett Loux on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 5:50 p.m. with Darrell Henry and Will DeBoer on the call. Saturday night marks Corey Thurman Night at PeoplesBank Park. The Revolution will retire Thurman's number 35 in a pregame ceremony, and the first 2,500 fans will receive a Corey Thurman poster.
