Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Sugar Land, TX) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (7-13) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (12-9) 4-1 at Constellation Field on Thursday night in a game that was called off by the umpiring crew after five and a half innings of play. After suffering a walk of loss in 11 innings in the opener between the two clubs on Tuesday, Bridgeport wins the final two games to take the series and improve to 2-1 on their current six game road trip.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Mike Antonini (2-3) was victorious notching the complete game after tossing five innings and allowing just one unearned run on three hits while walking two batters. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Sean Gallagher (1-2) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs (one earned run) on six hits, walking and striking out two , hitting a batter, and throwing a wild pitch.
Bridgeport wasted no time against Gallagher, going to work on the right hander in the top half of the first inning. Ruben Sosa Jr. opened up the contest with a leadoff walk, extending his on base streak to a team high 18 consecutive games. The Bluefish table setter then proceeded to steal his team leading eighth base, and was in scoring position with nobody out. Luis Hernandez followed with a walk of his own, putting runners at first and second. Luis Rodriguez then hit a hot smash to first base that was booted by Delwyn Young for an error, scoring Sosa Jr., and three batters into the game Bridgeport led 1-0. With runners at the corners and one out, Dan Johnson plated Hernandez with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors. The 'Fish would put a crooked number up before Sugar Land would even get a plate appearance when Rodriguez sprinted down the line from third base on a wild pitch induced by Gallagher to make it 3-0 Bridgeport after one half inning of play.
The Bluefish would add an insurance run in the top of the second again off Gallagher, who had a rough night at the office. Three consecutive singles by Rossmel Perez, Sosa Jr., and Hernandez loaded the basses, and Rodriguez would drive home Perez with a sacrifice fly to give Bridgeport a 4-0 cushion. Antonini's lone blemish came in the home half of the second when Patrick Palmeiro brought home Jeremy Barfield with a sacrifice fly after Barfield reached with a one out double, and Sugar Land was back to within three runs at 4-1. Antonini was terrific the rest of the way, helped out tremendously by his middle infield dynamic duo of Hernandez and Rodriguez who enabled the southpaw to get out of trouble twice by turning a pair of double plays behind him in the first three innings of the game. After Skeeters reliever Chris Treibt retired the side in order in the top of the sixth, the umpires called for the tarp to be placed on the field. Following a rain delay of one hour and six minutes and no end in sight of Mother Nature cooperating, the game was called and Bridgeport was awarded their second win in as many nights in the Lone Star State. Sosa Jr. led the way for Bridgeport with a pair of hits and reached base three times in four plate appearances, increasing his on-base percentage to .425, sixth overall in the Atlantic League. The Bluefish now head back to Connecticut where they will open up a three game weekend series on Friday night at 6:35 P.M. against their in state rivals the New Britain Bees at New Britain Stadium.
