Texas Legends and Pizza Hut Team up to Help All Kids Succeed Through Reading
March 9, 2018 - NBA G League (G League)
Texas Legends News Release
FRISCO, TX - In honor of National Reading Month, the Texas Legends are hosting Pizza Hut BOOK IT! night at the game on Saturday, March 10 to celebrate reading and to shine a spotlight on ways Legends fans can support literacy in the DFW-area.
Each school year, the BOOK IT! program runs from October through March - encouraging more than 250,000 DFW-area students to meet monthly reading goals. With the 2017-18 BOOK IT! program wrapping up in March, this extra-special Legends game will serve as a celebration for many area Legends fans that also participate in the program. Local BOOK IT! participants will get complimentary tickets to the game courtesy of Pizza Hut and select students will be plugged into game action through the player high-five tunnel, court appearances with the players, and in-game promotional contests.
In addition, the Legends will spotlight Pizza Hut: The Literacy Project and encourage fans to get involved. Pizza Hut, the nation's longest-standing corporate supporter of literacy, launched a giving program on February 26 to tackle issues that lead to illiteracy. Through Pizza Hut: The Literacy Project, the program will enable access to books and educational resources, empower teachers and inspire a lifelong love of reading.
The campaign, which runs through April 15, is a critical part of achieving the company's goal to transform the lives of 100 million people in just 10 years through reading. Pizza Hut is partnering with First Book, a recognized nonprofit, social sector leader, on its journey to fulfilling this goal.
Legends fans can join Pizza Hut on its mission by donating to Pizza Hut: The Literacy Project. Throughout the game, the Legends will use in-arena videos and will have flyers on all seats drawing awareness to the mission of Pizza Hut.
Supporters can also donate when they order from Pizza Hut in store, by phone and online or by visiting PizzaHut.com/TheLiteracyProject to give directly. All funds raised will provide educators of selected schools and programs located near Pizza Hut restaurants with credits to the First Book Marketplace.
"For most of our players, reading was a crucial part of their upbringing," said Legends Head Coach Bob MacKinnon. "They've been reading from a young age and continue to do so, whether for fun, to improve at their craft, or because I've assigned it. Even small bits of reading are tied into the game so it's a fundamental part of their lives. We want to make sure all children have these same opportunities."
As part of the campaign, Pizza Hut is also asking consumers to help jumpstart an important conversation about literacy. Tapping into the nostalgia many people have for reading their favorite childhood book, Pizza Hut is encouraging consumers to share the joy they experienced reading that book and to ask people to donate to help every child have that same experience.
The Legends players have shared their favorite books and childhood reading experiences, and the team will utilize these stories throughout the game. Legends players will also be suited up in custom jerseys celebrating classic literature for all ages.
As an incentive to share, Pizza Hut is giving away a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience to bring one lucky person's favorite book to life. Legends fans can enter for a chance to win by sharing the title of their favorite book and why it's important to them on Instagram or Twitter, tag @PizzaHut and use the hashtags #HelpStartANewChapter #sweepstakes. The winner will be announced by April 30.
The Legends will host the Reno Bighorns on Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Night, with the game tipping off at 7:30 p.m. CT. Tickets are available by calling 214-469-0822 or on the website at www.TexLegends.com.
Serving Communities Through Literacy
For 33 years, the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program has nurtured a love of reading in more than 65 million students across the country, but the company wanted to make a greater impact. Building on this legacy, Pizza Hut established The Literacy Project in 2016 to raise awareness for literacy-related issues and engage consumers to help make a difference. In its first year, the campaign impacted 15.9 million people and distributed more than 275,000 books and educational resources to communities in the U.S., Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica and South Africa.
