Terrance Extends Scoring Streak to 10 Games in 2-1 Loss to Defending Champs

October 28, 2023 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release

Erie, Pennsylvania - Three of a possible four points on the road in two incredibly tough barns bring the Otters home for the final game of their second-straight three-in-three, and final game of October. The task at hand on home ice would prove not to be an easy one, taking on the defending champion Peterborough Petes - who have picked up right where they left off from their championship season just months ago. With Haunted Hockey Night taking place in Erie, the Otters would look for a monster of a mash.

Erie would be back on its proverbial heels to start the game, as the Peterborough Petes would outshoot the Otters 8-3 early. As the Otters would storm forward, they would take over on the shots category in a 10-3 advantage. While each team would have an opportunity on the man-advantage in the first period, it would be the goaltending that would shine as Ben Gaudreau would stop 10 and Liam Sztuska would stop all 14 Erie shots. After 20 minutes of play, a 0-0 game would retain.

The Otters would come out swinging in the second period, taking on the first five shots and maintaining offensive pressure. Unfortunately for Erie, a high-sticking penalty would lead to an Erie penalty - that would lead to the game's first goal. Connor Lockhart (1) would open the gates for Peterborough on the power play just 3:58 in to give the Petes a 1-0 lead. Just under seven minutes later, history would repeat itself as another high-sticking penalty would lead to yet another power play goal for the Petes, with Owen Beck (5) doing the scoring duties. Erie would put an effort out toward the end of the frame, but a 2-0 deficit would await the Otters heading into the final frame. Shots would favor Erie 27-23.

All the gas left in the tank would come out for Erie in the third period, as the Otters would be desperate to finally beat Sztuska and the Peterborough defense. Despite outshooting the Petes 16-8 in the frame, the goaltender would once again stop nearly everything that would come his way. It would be with 6:03 remaining in the game that the streaking Carey Terrance (9) would find the back of the net and erupt the Erie crowd to make it a 2-1 game. The Otters would furiously shoot the puck on net in the final minutes, but a too-many-men penalty would mostly sink Erie's hopes of a comeback, as the team would fall 21- to the defending champions. The Otters would outshoot the Petes 43-31 in the loss.

November begins with a full weekend on the road for the Erie Otters. On Thursday night, Erie will battle against the Memorial Cup host Saginaw Spirit at the Dow Event Center. On Friday, the Otters will look to exorcise the demons of the last few seasons against the Flint Firebirds. After an off-day on Saturday, the Otters will battle the Sarnia Sting for the second time this season, looking to avenge a 6-4 loss on home ice earlier this season.
