Ten-run eighth sends Sox past Diablos 17-8

EL PASO, TX - The Amarillo Sox used a big inning on Tuesday night to get back in the game, while Jake Opitz led the charge for a ten-run eighth inning to propel the Sox over the El Paso Diablos 17-8 on Wednesday night at Cohen Stadium.

Sox pitcher Andrew Bowman (1-1) got the win, pitching an inning of scoreless relief. Diablos reliever Kyle Cremers (1-2) got the loss, allowing seven runs in the eighth inning. Opitz went 3-5 with two runs and five RBI, while Matt Tucker also contributed greatly with a 4-6 night with three RBI on the night.

The Sox took no time to get on the scoreboard as Jason White led off with a walk, went to third on a Tucker single and scored on a Opitz sacrifice fly. Tim Alberts would later single, take second on a wild pitch and score on a Buschini RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

El Paso got on the board in the third on a Nelson Teilon RBI single, while the Sox responded with an RBI single from Opitz in the fifth for a 3-1 Amarillo advantage.

The Diablos responded with a big fifth inning with four runs, three of them unearned on three hits and an error for a 5-3 El Paso lead.

The Sox began another comeback in the seventh as Harrison Kain led off with a walk, went to second on a Tucker single and scored on an error to pull the Sox within a run at 5-4.

In the eighth, Van Pope led off with a walk and took second on a Buschini single. Following a fielder's choice by Abeita, Garrett Rau singled to load the bases. Kain delivered an RBI double to score both Buschini and Abeita. Following a White walk to load the bases, Tucker delivered a bases clearing triple to score Rau, Kain and White. Opitz followed with a double to score Tucker. Following walks to Alberts and Pope, Buschini hit into a fielder's choice to score Opitz Abeita delivered a three-run homerun for a ten-run inning for a 14-5 lead.

Opitz added a two-run homer in the ninth while Alberts scored on an error for three additional runs. Despite some runs, reliever Paul Montalbano finished off El Paso in the ninth to preserve the 17-8 win.

With the win, the Sox improve to 15-11 while the Diablos fall to 6-20. Following a Thursday off day, Amarillo will travel home to take on the Gary SouthShore Railcats for the opening game of the three-game set at 7:05pm.
