Pheasants Add Rookie Infielder from NDSU

SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Pheasants signed infielder Max Casper on Wednesday, a true rookie from North Dakota State University.

In a concurrent move, the Pheasants released right-handed pitcher Matthew Sommo.

Casper, 21, batted .300 in his senior year this season with 10 extra-base hits and 20 RBI. He started every game for the Bison, helping them reach the Summit League championship. The durable infielder set a career record with NDSU for games played and is third all-time in runs scored. He also ranks among the top fielders and shortstops in school history.

Casper, a native of Circle Pines, Minn., was a career .292 hitter with 81 RBI at NDSU.

Sommo made six appearances, including three starts, as a rookie with the Pheasants. He went 1-1 with an 8.64 ERA in 25 innings pitched, striking out 13 and walking 16.
