American Association Game Recaps

Lincoln 5, Winnipeg 2

RHP Ryan Sheldon stymied Winnipeg's hitters en route to a 5-2 Saltdogs win. Sheldon threw eight scoreless innings, allowing six hits. Though he did not strike out many Goldeyes, the righty faced the minimum number of hitters through the first five innings. Sheldon delivered two double plays and C AJ Miller threw out a runner to halt early Winnipeg opportunities. Offensively, 3B Jared McDonald led the Saltdogs. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Grand Prairie 7, Laredo 6

The AirHogs struck for six runs in the sixth inning to overcome a three-run deficit and defeat Laredo, 7-6. The outburst helped RHP Josh Strawn earn his third win of the year for the AirHogs. He threw well for seven innings, but was victimized by errors. Strawn gave up four unearned runs on just three hits and could have been in line for the loss if not for the breakout in the sixth. The sixth inning showed signs of unraveling from the start for the Lemurs. RHP Chris Chavez struggled to find the strike zone and began the sixth by loading the bases on two walks and a hit. He subsequently hit 1B Andres Rodriguez to score the first run of the inning. Two pitching changes could not slow down the Grand Prairie rally, as the AirHogs scored five more on three hits, a walk and an error. LHP Justin Dowdy held on in the ninth for the save, despite giving up a pair of runs that cut the advantage to one run.

Newark 2, Kansas City 1(10 innings)

Newark 2B Juan Martinez made Kansas City pay for an untimely error in the top of the tenth. Three batters after C Billy Alvino reached on an error, Martinez singled him home to break a 1-1 tie. The RBI was Martinez's second of the game and ultimately won the game for the Bears. Earlier, T-Bones 1B Trevor Coleman had knotted the game with a leadoff home run in the sixth, ultimately forcing extra innings. Jorge Vasquez got the win in relief for Newark, but it was Kansas City RHP Josh Rainwater who delivered the game's best performance. He got the no-decision after throwing nine innings and giving up one run. Rainwater's one mistake was a triple by DH Alex Bardeguez to leadoff the game. The triple immediately led to the game's first run, when Martinez drove home Bardeguez on a ground out.

Gary SouthShore 4, Wichita 2

The RailCats took advantage of the few chances they had to top Wichita, 4-2. Gary SouthShore only managed five hits throughout the game, but manufactured runs in the second, fourth and sixth. The RailCats scored in three of the six innings in which they put runners on base, and stranded only five runners in total. RHP Stephen Hiscock earned the win with a six-inning, three-hit, one-run performance. RHP Will Krout picked up his seventh save, working a scoreless ninth.

St. Paul 10, Fargo-Moorhead 6

LF Willie Cabrera got it started early and the Saints never looked back, beating the RedHawks, 10-6. Cabrera opened the Saints' scoring with a three-run home run in the first, quickly flipping the score at 3-2. St. Paul expanded the lead with runs in each of the next four innings, including a three-run third. The RedHawks gave St. Paul a scare in the ninth, cutting the deficit to three with a three-run homer by 2B Carlo Cota. Billy Severtson closed the door, however, and gave TJ Wink his first win with the Saints. St. Paul's offense finished with 15 hits, including two more two long-balls by 2B Adam Frost and 1B Ole Sheldon.
