Reading Fightin Phils News Release

The Reading Fightin Phils used a six-run eighth inning to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) 8-2 to open a six-game homestand.

Johan Rojas and Aldrem Corredor each had three hits and an RBI while Kevin Vicuna added two hits and an RBI. The Fightins connected for 12 hits, half of which occurred in the bottom of the eighth.

The Sea Dogs took a lead in the first as David Hamilton doubled, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Ceddanne Rafaela's sacrifice fly.

Rojas walked and stole second to lead off the bottom half. He scored on Corredor's single to knot the game at one run apiece.

Reading took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Rojas hit an infield single and promptly swiped his second bag, for 49 on the season, of the game on the next pitch. The R-Phils center fielder tallied the go-ahead run on Vicuna's single.

Portland loaded the bases and scored a run on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Noah Skirrow got his fourth strikeout to end the inning.

Neither team could break the tie in the seventh inning but the R-Phils found rhythm at the plate in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead for good.

With one out, Wendell Rijo singled and stole second. He advanced to third on Corredor's single and scored on Jhailyn Ortiz's base knock. McCarthy Tatum took first to load the bases after he was hit by a pitch. Herbert Iser drove home Corredor on a single and Madison Stokes followed with an RBI groundout. A balk forced in another run then Jonathan Guzman laced an RBI single to center field. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Rojas' single to set the final score.

The Sea Dogs got two base runners on two singles in the ninth, but Brian Marconi induced a groundout and a strikeout to end the game.

Skirrow got the start on the rubber. He went six innings and gave up two runs on three hits while fanning four. He notched his 100th strikeout of the season and then some.

Trevor Bettencourt came in to start the seventh inning. He didn't give up a hit or a run and struck out two through two innings. The righty picked up his first win of the season.

Marconi pitched a scoreless ninth frame and struck out two to preserve the victory.

The Fightins will play at FirstEnergy Stadium next on August 17 at 7:00 PM.
