Portland Sea Dogs News Release

SUNDAY'S FINALE - The Sea Dogs closed out the six-game series against the Flying Squirrels with a 10-7 win on Sunday. The Sea Dogs took the lead in the bottom of the first inning against Flying Squirrels starter Wil Jensen. Rob Refsnyder led off with a solo homer to right-center. It was the first homer of his rehab stint with the Sea Dogs and gave them a 1-0 lead. Portland struck again in the bottom of the third with Jensen still on the mound. Tyler Dearden led off with a walk. Refsnyder launched his second homer of the game, this time over the Maine Monster in left, increasing the lead for the Sea Dogs to 2-0. Richmond brought in their first runs of the game in the top of the fourth against Portland reliever Casey Cobb. With one out, Tristan Peters doubled to center. Armani Smith grounded out, advancing Peters to third. Ricardo Genoves walked, and Carter Aldrete doubled to left, scoring Peters and Genoves, making it a 3-2 game. Casey Schmitt followed with a double of his own, scoring Aldrete, tying the game at 3-3. The runs continued to pour in for the Sea Dogs in the bottom of the fourth frame. Stephen Scott led off with a double and Wilyer Abreu reached on a fielding error. Alex Binelas cleared the bases with a three- run home run, putting Portland ahead 6-3. Two more came in to score in the bottom of the fifth for Portland on an Abreu RBI double and a Binelas sacrifice fly, making it 8-3. In the sixth Koss hit a sacrifice fly and Abreu had another run-scoring hit, making it 10-3. The Flying Squirrels attempted to come back in the ninth, scoring four runs but fell short as the Sea Dogs secured their fifth win of the series, 10-7.

NORTHEAST DIVISION LEADERS - After a successful series against Richmond that added five wins to their record, Portland sits 1.5 games in the lead of the Northeast Division of the Eastern League. Somerset, the first-half winners of the division, is currently trailing by 1.5 games. Hartford lost ground during their series last week against Somerset and is now 3.5 games behind Portland for the lead. The Sea Dogs have one series left against each of these division opponents, welcoming the Yard Goats to Hadlock Field on August 23 and paying the Patriots a visit on the road on September 13 for the final series of the regular season.

FREE PASS PEST - Ever since getting the call up to Double-A Portland in June, Stephen Scott has been a menace at the plate. His selective approach has led to a .400 on-base percentage with a good mixture of hits and walks. Over the 24 games Scott has played since July 12, he has posted a .416 on-base percentage. He has hit .243 (18-for-74) during this time, but more impressively, has worked 22 walks compared to just 21 strikeouts. He has accumulated seven multi-walk games during this time period, six with two walks, and one with three.

NEW FACE, NEW STREAK - Wilyer Abreu joined the Sea Dogs on August 3, coming to the Red Sox organization in the Christian Vazquez trade at the deadline. Before being added to Portland's roster, he had played 89 games with Double-A Corpus Christi in the Astro's system, where he posted a .399 on-base percentage and a .249 average. More recently, Abreu has mounted a five-game on-base streak. Over the streak, he is 5-for-16 (.313) with two doubles, three RBI, four runs scored, two walks, six strikeouts, and a .389 OBP.

THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - August 16, 2013 - Henry Owens fanned 10 over 5 hitless innings in a 4-1 win at Harrisburg.

PITCHING MATCHUP - Thaddeus Ward is set to take the mound for his third start with Portland this season. He made his first appearance with the Sea Dogs on August 4, going 3.2 scoreless innings with five walks and two strikeouts against the Erie SeaWolves. Ward improved his command in his second start with the club, this time keeping the Richmond Flying Squirrels scoreless over 5.0 innings on three hits, walking two and striking out four in the process. Overall, he has yet to allow an earned run and has held opponents to a .158 batting average over his first 8.2 innings this season. ‚¬Å
