Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Frederick, Md. (May 9, 2014) - Winston-Salem mustered nine hits against Frederick starter Matt Taylor, but the southpaw did not allow a run in seven and a third innings during the Keys' 4-0 victory over the Dash on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium.
Taylor (4-1), who entered Friday with the Carolina League's best earned run average, dropped that mark to 1.09 after working into the eighth inning for the first time this season.
This dynamite outing overshadowed J.B. Wendelken's career-high 10 strikeouts, which were one shy of a Dash-era record (2009-present). Hector Santiago whiffed 11 back on April 16, 2011, while Wendelken became the first Dash hurler to record double-digit punchouts since Chris Bassitt also logged 10 in Frederick on June 29, 2013.
However, Frederick (14-18) scored in three different innings against Wendelken (3-3), who surrendered four runs on seven hits. The Keys plated a pair in the first thanks to four consecutive hits to begin the frame. Lucas Herbst's solo blast on the first pitch of the third made it 3-0. The Keys wrapped up the game's scoring on Michael Burgess' RBI double in the sixth.
Winston-Salem (12-20) spoiled a golden opportunity against Taylor in the first. Adam Heisler led off the frame with a single to push his hitting streak to nine games, the longest active run in the CL. After a fly out, Courtney Hawkins and Grant Buckner strung together consecutive hits to load the bases. However, Taylor evaded the jam with a strikeout and a pop out.
Over the next eight innings against Taylor and Jesse Beal, Winston-Salem would muster seven base runners, but only one ventured into scoring position.
This four-game set rolls along Saturday at 6 p.m. from Maryland. Winston-Salem sends right-hander Francellis Montas (0-0, 1.80 ERA) to the hill for his second High-A start, while Frederick has yet to announce a starter. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a seven-game homestand that kicks off next Thursday, May 15, with 50 percent off all beer through the seventh inning. For tickets to this upcoming homestand, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
