WINSTON-SALEM DASH (12-19) at FREDERICK KEYS (13-18)
RHP J.B. Wendelken (3-2, 4.46 ERA) vs. LHP Matt Taylor (3-1, 1.32 ERA)
7 p.m. - Harry Grove Stadium (Frederick, Md.)
BASTO, HEISLER, RECCHIA SHINE IN WIN Both Nick Basto and Adam Heisler drove home three runs in support of Mike Recchia's dominant outing during the Dash's 7-2 win at Frederick on Thursday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Heisler's three-run blast capped a four-run second inning that pushed the Dash in front for good. Recchia surrendered just two runs (one earned) in seven innings, during which he tied a career high with nine strikeouts. The Keys mustered only four hits in what was the opener of the Dash's week-long road trip.
HOMERS WHEN LEAVING HOME The Dash rediscovered their home run game in Thursday's thorough triumph. Courtney Hawkins went yard with the bases empty and two down in the first. One inning later, Adam Heisler blasted a three-run shot on the first pitch he saw. Dating back to Wednesday afternoon, the Dash have hit three taters in the last six innings after enduring a 47-inning homerless drought that stretched back to last Friday. Thanks to their two-homer night Thursday, Winston is now tied for fourth in the Carolina League with 16 home runs. The Dash have paced the CL in this category in each of the last four seasons.
HAWKINS CONTINUES TO CLIMB Dash slugger Courtney Hawkins has eight of those 16 home runs, and he has driven in 31 runs in his first 28 games. As a result, Hawkins is tied for fifth in all of Minor League Baseball in RBIs, trailing Marquez Smith of Bakersfield (High-A, Cincinnati) by six for the top spot. However, Hawkins does have more RBIs per game (1.11 in 28 games) than any other Minor Leaguer with more than 25 RBIs.
FUN IN FREDERICK With their win Thursday, the Dash improved to 14-5 at Harry Grove Stadium since the start of the 2012 season. In those 19 games, Winston has scored 128 runs, or 6.7 runs per game. The Dash have not lost a set in Frederick since dropping three of four from August 11-14, 2011.
NINE AND YOU'RE MINE Dash starter Mike Recchia continued his torrid start to 2014 with another dynamite outing Thursday. Recchia matched career highs in innings (7.0) and strikeouts (9) in his third quality start, which is tied for the team lead. The Worth, Ill., native leads the Carolina League with 43 whiffs, which are third-most in High-A baseball and tied for 13th in the Minors. With six starts under his belt this season, Recchia has at least five strikeouts in each of those outings. He also lowered his ERA to 2.97, 12th-best in the CL.
RISING HEISLER Winston-Salem outfielder Adam Heisler boasts the longest current hitting streak in the Carolina League, an eight-game run that dates back to April 26. The Mobile, Ala., product is hitting 10-for-32 (.313) with one homer, five RBIs and six runs scored. With a knock Friday, Heisler will claim the longest hitting streak by a Dash hitter thus far this season. Courtney Hawkins also posted an eight-game hitting streak from April 3-11, the first eight contests of the season.
FIRST IN A WHILE Winston-Salem committed an error and allowed an unearned run in Thursday's victory. The Dash are tied for sixth in Minor League Baseball with 48 total errors, which is one shy of Myrtle Beach for the top spot in the Carolina League. Winston does own the most unearned runs in the Minors with 48, which are four more than the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Low-A San Diego), who lead the Minor Leagues with 71 defensive miscues.
DASH DOTS Nick Basto and Adam Heisler set season highs with three RBIs on Thursday...The Dash hit for the cycle as a team in their four-run second inning...Winston-Salem went yard twice in one game for just the third time this season...Jason Coats stole two bases in a single game for the first time as a Minor Leaguer...J.B. Wendelken is tied with Tony Bucciferro and Mike Recchia for the team lead with three quality starts.
