(Peterborough, ON) - Peterborough Petes defenceman Matt Spencer was selected in the second round, 44th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in Sunrise, Florida on Saturday morning.

Spencer, a 6'2", 201lbs defenceman from Oakville, Ontario, is coming off his second season with the Petes. This past season, the sophomore blueliner scored 6 goals and added 24 assists for 30 points, doubling the scoring output of his rookie campaign.

Scouts had high praise for Spencer heading into the draft, with scouts noting that "his first passes are simply ferocious. Beyond that he has a good sized body and above-average tools."

The rearguard was ranked 68th among North American skaters heading into the draft by NHL Central Scouting, and added to his stock with the top VO2 Max score of all prospects at the NHL combine in June.

Spencer was the first defenceman taken in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection when the Petes picked him third overall. He was the 14th defenceman taken in the NHL draft this weekend.
