Tacoma Goes Yard Four Times, But Falls Short 9-8 at Salt Lake

June 7, 2022 - Pacific Coast League (PCL)
Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Salt Lake City, UT - After beginning this road trip 3-0, the Tacoma Rainiers (19-35) dropped their fourth straight on Tuesday evening against the Salt Lake Bees (30-25), letting a five-run lead slip away in a 9-8 final. This nine-game trip will conclude with two more in the Beehive State, on Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon, the rare three-game set in the 2022 PCL.

Tacoma sprinted to a 5-0 lead before Salt Lake tied it. Justin Upton, in his fifth appearance with the Rainiers, lifted an opposite field homer for the second time in as many games to make it 1-0 in the top of the first inning. In the visiting second, Cesar Izturis, Jr. doubled down the left field line scoring both Andrew Knapp (error) and Mason McCoy (single). A batter later, Jarred Kelenic launched his sixth homer in 18 games since being optioned to Tacoma by Seattle, and extended the longest Rainiers hit streak this season to 12 games in the process.

In the home half of the second, the Bees promptly tied the game; Kean Wong unloaded the bases with a three-run double to the wall in center field, with one out. Dillon Thomas, a member of the 2021 Triple-A West Champion Rainiers, walked with two down, and both he and Wong scored on a David MacKinnon (3-for-5) double that made it 5-5.

With two on in the fourth, another former Rainier, Jack Mayfield (briefly to begin last season), lifted a high fly ball into the mountain air, which exited to center for his first Triple-A home run of the year.

Still trailing 8-5 in the sixth, Tacoma struck back when Marcus Wilson whacked his eighth homer, a two-run shot to left following McCoy's second hit of the night, a leadoff single. On an MLB rehab assignment, RHP Erik Swanson pitched a scoreless sixth for the Rainiers, working around two hits (1 K).

Trailing 9-7 in the eighth, the fourth Tacoma homer of the night, an Alex Blandino solo shot (2) lifted opposite field to right-center, drew the Rainiers back within a run. That would conclude the scoring however, as Salt Lake's Gerardo Reyes struck out one in a scoreless ninth for his third save. A Rainiers bullpen quartet of Danny Young, Swanson, Drew Steckenrider and Matt Brash would combine to pitch 4.0 IP without an earned run (1.0 IP apiece), combining to allow only three hits with five strikeouts.

The middle game of this series is scheduled for 5:35 PT on Wednesday, at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City. LHP Tommy Milone (1-0, 1.29) will start for the Rainiers, against Bees LHP Jake Kalish (6-1, 1.76).
