Fresno Grizzlies News Release
In front of a crowd of 10,198, the Tacoma Rainiers defeated the Fresno Tacos 13-0 on opening night at Chukchansi Park. After an offensive barrage (41 runs in five games) at Reno, Tacoma starter Christian Bergman (1-0) stymied the Tacos' bats for seven shutout innings, striking out eight. Bergman has not allowed a run in 12 and two-thirds innings while striking out 16 in two starts.
On the other side, Fresno starter Mike Hauschild (no decision) diced his way through six shutout innings, giving up three hits, two walks and striking out nine. After his eighth strikeout, Hauschild passed Robbie Crabtree for fourth all-time in career strikeouts in a Fresno uniform.
The Rainiers finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the seventh after Hauschild departed for relieverMatt Ramsey (0-1). Matt Hague's (2-for-4) RBI single and Ben Gamel's (MLB rehab) (2-for-4) sacrifice fly gave Tacoma a 2-0 advantage. The lead imploded to 13-0 after an 11-run top of the ninth. After a leadoff double by John Andreoli (2-for-4), Fresno State alumni Danny Muno blasted an RBI triple over the head of Kyle Tucker in right field. He would later score on a Hague single. Tacoma added nine more runs after the single, ending any Tacos' rally.
The two teams will play the second contest of the three-game series tomorrow night from Chukchansi Park. Fresno will start RHP Trent Thornton (0-1, 0.00) opposite of LHP Ariel Miranda (0-1, 0.00) for Tacoma.
