Madison Mallards News Release
Eau Claire, WI - June 9, 2013. The Madison Mallards (5-5) will be squaring off against the Eau Claire Express (3-7) in the second game of a two-game series just one night after squeaking out a 3-1 win despite recording just one hit.
Outfielder Tate Matheny (Missouri State) recorded the Mallards only hit of the game in the second inning by taking Express starter Ed Brandsema (Montevallo) deep to put the Mallards up 1-0. It was his second straight game with a home run and he is now hitting .324 with eight RBIs on the season.
The Mallards scored two more in the top of the sixth thanks to a pair of Express errors. Brandsema lasted six innings, struck out four and walked four.
Mallards starter Jamie Nunn (Appalachian State) got the win by going five innings, allowing just one earned run - which was unearned - and striking out five. He improved to 1-0 on the year and his ERA still sits at 0.00 after two starts on the year.
Jordan Tabakman (UConn) will be making his Mallards debut tonight and will start on the hill. Tabakman and the Huskies made the 2013 NCAA Baseball Tournament but went 1-3 in the Blacksburg Regional and were eliminated. He pitched nine innings and allowed three runs - three earned - in their 5-3 loss to Oklahoma during the tournament. He went 6-2 with an ERA of just 2.57 in 22 appearances - seven starts - over the course of the 2013 season with the Huskies.
Finding a Way to Win
Saturday's 3-1 win for the Mallards wasn't the only time they pulled away victorious despite being out-hit by the opposition this season. The Mallards won 4-2 on opening night against the Express by recording just two hits.
