Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Five Mankato MoonDog players were taken in the 2013 MLB Draft that concluded Saturday. But in the end, it was the team with the fewer draft picks that picked up the win.
The Alexandria Blue Anchors picked up a big victory Saturday night, topping the Mankato MoonDogs 5-3 in front of a crowd of 583 fans at the Shipyard.
Alexandria got the scoring started in the third inning. Jamie Ritchie (Belmont) led the inning off with a solo home run, his first of the year. Kris Goodman (Iowa) would later push the lead to 2-0, scoring on an Albert Baur (Newberry College) single.
After Mankato cut into the lead at 2-1 in the fourth, the Blue Anchors tacked on two more runs to grow the lead to 4-1. Andrew Mulato (Michigan State) scored on a Tim Cusick (Dakota Wesleyan) single, and Cusick would later score on an Andrew Sohn (Western Michigan) sacrifice fly. The fourth would be the last inning pitched for Mankato pitcher and Los Angeles Dodgers draft pick Rob Cerfolio (Yale).
After making a spectacular grab to end the top of the 6th, Austin Listi (Dallas Baptist) crushed a 1-2 pitch over the fence to give the Anchors a 5-1 lead. Mankato responded with single runs in the eighth and ninth inning, but Tyler Beck (Augsburg) shut the door on a MoonDog rally.
Chase Rihtarchik (Michigan State, 1-0) went seven strong innings for the Blue Anchors, giving up only one run while striking out five. Two days after making a spot start for Alexandria, Tyler Beck (Augsburg) came in and closed the game, pitching two innings to record his first save. With the two home runs, Ritchie and Listi became the ninth and tenth Blue Anchors players to hit home runs for the team this year. With the win, the Blue Anchors improve to 2-8 on the season.
The Blue Anchors will take on the Willmar Stingers Sunday at the Shipyard. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05pm. A reminder to all fans that Sunday is the Blue Anchors Souvenir Baseball Giveaway, sponsored by Elden's Fresh Foods. The first 150 fans through the gate get a free souvenir baseball, courtesy of Elden's. Also, Sunday is Senior Day at the Ballpark, sponsored by Rice Home Medical.
